2. Radiation-resistant optical fibre fabry perot
interferometer used for High-Temperature sensing
• An optical fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer based on
sapphire wafer is designed and fabricated for high-
temperature sensing under Co-60 γ irradiation.
• The sensing probe is composed by a thin sapphire wafer
and a pure silica multi-mode fiber.
3. • The whole sensing system has the capability to survive in high
temperature environment that surpasses 800 C
• The interferometer can achieve the high sensitivity of 29.9
pm/C at the wavelength around 1340nm when the temperature
is 800 C
• The proposed sensor and sensing system has great potential to
be applied under strong irradiation and high temperature
4. What was the first interferometer ?
• Michelson , in 1891 , was the first scientist to make
extensive use of an interferometer. His device
consisted of a half-silvered mirror that split an
incoming light beam into two paths
5. FABRY-PEROT INTERFEROMETER
• Fabry –perot interferometer is widely used in
communication system and optical fibre sensing
systems
• The fabry – perot cavity is formed on a pyrex
capillary attached to the fibre tip

7. Use of Fabry-Perot Interferometer
• The fabry- perot interferometer uses the phenomenon of uses the
phenomenon of multiple beam interference that arises when light
shines through a cavity bounded by two reflective parallel surfaces
• The advantage of interferometry for optical astronomers is that it
can provide measurements of starts with a higher angular
resolution than is possible with conventional telescopes
9. What type of light is required for
interferometer?
• A broadband “white light” source is used to
illuminate the test and reference surfaces.A
condenser lens collimates the light from the
broadband light source.A beam splitter seperates
the light into reference and measurements beams
10. DISADVANTAGE OF INTERFEROMETRY
• One disadvantage of interferometry is that less
light is collected on the separate mirrors/antennas
of the array, than if one telescope as large as the
array was used –it is as if there are gaps in the light
collecting surface of the virtual telescope
11. Disadvantage of the Michelson Interferometer:
• It is possible to solve this problem by using cube
corner mirrors and the four-port design, but this is
more costly .Accurate readings, particularly for
white light, can be difficult to achieve and
necessarily involves careful monitoring of the
beam paths
12. Advantage of Fabry Perot Interferometer?
• Fabry-perot interferometers , which feature
common optical paths , are insensitive to
environmental disturbances .That would be
advantageous for precision displacement
measurements under ordinary enivornmental
conditions
13. What fiber is used in interferomrtric
instruments ?
•The fiber-optic-based interferometer sensor
uses optical fibresbasbligjt carriers and obtains
the detection information from fiber –
connected transducers or directly from fibers
themselves
14. What are four common fiber
applications ?
Applications of Optical Fiber
Medical, used as light guides, imaging tools
Defense/Government
Data Storage
16. Which is fiber interferometer?
•Fiber optic interferometers are employed
to measure different physical magnitude
such as temperature, strain, pressure or
refractive index
