Phyllis Wheatley was a slave girl born in West Africa who was brought to Boston in 1761 and sold to the Wheatley family. She learned to read and write English and showed a great aptitude for poetry. By the age of 20, she had published a book of poems that received praise in both America and England. Despite her achievements, she was still considered property under the law and struggled to support herself after she was freed from slavery.
