Product Design Trends in 2024 | Teenage EngineeringsPixeldarts
The realm of product design is a constantly changing environment where technology and style intersect. Every year introduces fresh challenges and exciting trends that mold the future of this captivating art form. In this piece, we delve into the significant trends set to influence the look and functionality of product design in the year 2024.
How Race, Age and Gender Shape Attitudes Towards Mental HealthThinkNow
Mental health has been in the news quite a bit lately. Dozens of U.S. states are currently suing Meta for contributing to the youth mental health crisis by inserting addictive features into their products, while the U.S. Surgeon General is touring the nation to bring awareness to the growing epidemic of loneliness and isolation. The country has endured periods of low national morale, such as in the 1970s when high inflation and the energy crisis worsened public sentiment following the Vietnam War. The current mood, however, feels different. Gallup recently reported that national mental health is at an all-time low, with few bright spots to lift spirits.
To better understand how Americans are feeling and their attitudes towards mental health in general, ThinkNow conducted a nationally representative quantitative survey of 1,500 respondents and found some interesting differences among ethnic, age and gender groups.
Technology
For example, 52% agree that technology and social media have a negative impact on mental health, but when broken out by race, 61% of Whites felt technology had a negative effect, and only 48% of Hispanics thought it did.
While technology has helped us keep in touch with friends and family in faraway places, it appears to have degraded our ability to connect in person. Staying connected online is a double-edged sword since the same news feed that brings us pictures of the grandkids and fluffy kittens also feeds us news about the wars in Israel and Ukraine, the dysfunction in Washington, the latest mass shooting and the climate crisis.
Hispanics may have a built-in defense against the isolation technology breeds, owing to their large, multigenerational households, strong social support systems, and tendency to use social media to stay connected with relatives abroad.
Age and Gender
When asked how individuals rate their mental health, men rate it higher than women by 11 percentage points, and Baby Boomers rank it highest at 83%, saying it’s good or excellent vs. 57% of Gen Z saying the same.
Gen Z spends the most amount of time on social media, so the notion that social media negatively affects mental health appears to be correlated. Unfortunately, Gen Z is also the generation that’s least comfortable discussing mental health concerns with healthcare professionals. Only 40% of them state they’re comfortable discussing their issues with a professional compared to 60% of Millennials and 65% of Boomers.
Race Affects Attitudes
As seen in previous research conducted by ThinkNow, Asian Americans lag other groups when it comes to awareness of mental health issues. Twenty-four percent of Asian Americans believe that having a mental health issue is a sign of weakness compared to the 16% average for all groups. Asians are also considerably less likely to be aware of mental health services in their communities (42% vs. 55%) and most likely to seek out information on social media (51% vs. 35%).

Photoshop layerid i
1. Töö layeritega
Iga Photoshopi fail (*.psd) sisaldab vähemalt üht, kuid enamasti rohkemaid layereid ehk kihte.
Uue faili loomisel sisaldub faili sees taustakiht e background layer, mis sisaldab kas värvi või
kujutist, ja on vaadeldav läbi pealpool asuvate layerite läbipaistvate (transparent) pindade.
Kõik järgnevalt lisatavad layered on läbipaistvad seni, kuni neile lisatakse piksleid e asetatakse
tekst või kujutis (=pikslid). Layeritega töötamine on analoogne nt kalkast või kilest moodustatud
mitmekihiliste piltidega.
Layerite palett kuvab kõigi layerite nimed koos thumbnail-kujutisega layeri sisust. Kõiki layereid
saab peita, vaadata, ümber reastada, kustutada, ümber nimetada ja kokku sulatada (merge).
Layerite palett avaneb Window > Layers
Layeri aktiveerimiseks tuleb hiirega klikata layeri paletis layeri peal. Aktiivne layer on paletis
tumeda taustaga. Lukustatud/mitteaktiivse layeri nime ees on lukk . Kujutise aknas nähtava
layeri nime ees on silma pilt .
Thumbnaili suurust saab muuta, kasutades selleks kontekstimenüüd e parema hiireklahvi alt
avanevat menüüd. Parema hiireklahviga tuleb klikkida thumbnailil ja valida soovikohaselt No
Thumbnails, Small Thumbnails, Medium Thumbnails, or Large Thumbnails.
1
2. Background layer
Uue faili loomisel photoshopis, mille taust on kas valge või värviline, nimetatakse kõige alumine
layer nimega Background layer e taustalayer. Kujutisel saab olla ainult üks taust. Seetõttu ei saa
background layerit tema asukohast kusagile mujale tõsta; see jääb alati kõige alumiseks. Samuti
Backgound layerit on siiski
Kuidas konvertida background layeriks:
1. Layerite paletil tuleb teha topeltklikk Backgroundil, või valida menüüst Layer > New >
Layer From Background.
2. Määrake layerite seaded (options) ja vajadusel nimetage layer ümber.
3. OK.
Kuidas konvertida layer backgroundiks:
1. Layerite paletil valige vajalik layer.
2. Menüüst Layer > New > Background From Layer.
NB: Ühtki layerit ei saa muuta taustaks, pannes talle nimeks “Background”. Tuleb kasutada
käsklust Layer From Background.
Layeri kopeerimine ja ümbernimetamine
Uue layeri loomiseks mingist objektist/kujutisest tuleb faili sisse asetada soovitud kujutis teisest
failist. Iga uue elemendi lisamisel tekib uus layer. Kujutise lohistamisel (dragging) ühest failist
teise peavad mõlemad failid olema avatud. Kasutage tööriista Move Tool.
2
3. NB: Kui kujutise lohistamisel ühest failist teise hoida all SHIFT klahvi, paigutub lohistatav
kujutis automaatselt uue kujutise aknas keskele (tsentreeritakse).
Layeri ümbernimetamiseks tehke topeltklikk layerite paletis layeri nimel, misjärel saab selle
umber nimetada. Käskluse kinnitamiseks vajutage klaviatuuril enter.
Layerite ümberpaigutamine
Layerite järjekord e asetus failis on stacking order ja sellest sõltub nähtav kujutis. Järjekorda
saab muuta layerite paletil layereid soovitud kohta lohistades. Samuti saab kasutada Layeri
menüüst käskluse Layer > Arrange alamkäsklusi: Bring to Front (toob kõige ette), Bring
Forward (toob 1 astme võrra ettepoole), Send to Back (viib kõige taha), Send Backward (viib 1
astme võrra tahapoole).
Läbipaistmatuse (opacity) ja segunemisviisi (blending mode) muutmine
Läbipaistmatu kujutis varjab temast tagapool olevad teised kujutised. Kui läbipaistmatust
vähendada, hakkab kujutis määratud osas läbi paistma ja nähtavale ilmuvad teised, tagapool
asetsevad objektid. Samuti saab layerile määrata erinevad segunemisviisid (blending mode), mis
määratlevad läbipaistmatul layeril asuvate pikslite segunemise viisi allpoole asuvate layerite
pikslitega. Vaikimisi on blending mode Normal. Nii opacity kui blending mode on muudetavad
iga layeri kohta eraldi.
3
Dissolve - Tekitab "pritsmete" efekti
Darken, multiply, color burn, linear burn - lisavad tumedust
Lighten, screen, color dodge, linear dodge - lisavad heledust
Hue - lisab värvikomponendi
Saturation - lisab erksuskomponendi
Color - lisab värvi- ja heleduskomponendi
Luminosity - lisab heleduskomponendi
on sellel kohal mingi objekt. Kui layer on tühi (läbipaistev), on Blend Mode
alati normal.
Layerite linkimine (kokkusidumine)
Võib ette tulla, et mõned layered tuleb töö käigus omavahel liikumatult ühendada ehk linkida.
See võimaldab kahe või enama layeri omavahelist asetust muutumatuna hoida. Liigutamisel
liigutatakse kõiki lingitud layereid koos.
Layerite linkimiseks:
1. Aktiveeri layer
2. Vajuta alla SHIFT ja seda all hoides selekteeri teine (kolmas, neljas jne) layer, mida
soovid esimesena valitud layeri külge linkida.
3. Vajuta menüü alaosas ikoonile LINK või vali Layers paleti menüüst Link Layers.
Joonis järgmisel leheküljel.
4
5. Lingitud layerite nime juurde ilmub linkimise ikoon.
Uue layeri lisamine
Uue tühja layeri loomiseks kasutatakse nuppu New Layer . Sama käsklust saab anda ka
Layeri paleti menüüst (New Layer) või menüüribalt Layer > New > Layer.
Vastloodud layerile saab lisada värve, täidiseid jne. Selleks kasutada Layer menüüd.
Tekstilayeri lisamiseks tuleb tööriistakastist leida Type Tool, klikata tööriistaga töö pinnal, et
paika panna kursor ja seejärel kirjutada tekst. See muutub iseenesest uueks layeriks, millele saab
rakendada kõiki teistelegi layeritele võimalkke optsioone. Valmis teksti saab liigutada Move
Tool´i kasutades.
Layer style
Layereid saab kujundada, lisades neile eriefekte.
külge lingitav. Ka Layer style´i saab nähtavaks/nähtamatuks muuta silma ikooni klikkides;
olemasolevat stiili saab kopeerida teistele layeritele, selleks neid layeri peale lohistades.
5
6. Efekti saab lisada: Layer > Layer Style; või klikates f-tähe kujulist märki "Add a Layer Style
button" () Layers paleti allsevas, ja seejärel valides sobiva efekti. Layeri stiili lisamisel saab efekti
sobivust kontrollida, jälgides, et "Preview" kastis oleks linnuke.
Kõik lisatud layer style´id lisanduvad layeri paletile. Iga layeri alla reastuvad astme võrra
sissepoole kõik kasutatud efektid. Neid saab muuta nähtavaks/nähtamatuks silma ikoonil
klikkides.
koopiat algfailist.
Merge ühendab omavahel üheks valitud flaierid Valimiseks hoidke all SHIFT klahvi ja klikake
soovitud layeril layeri paletis.
7
