The largest fair of photographic art is hosted annually in NYC by AIPAD (Association of International Photography Art Dealers) and features exhibition booths presenting a wide range of styles, subject matter, print sizes - both newer work and vintage imagery. I have attended a number of times in the past and also have photographed the event, with the goal of documenting how people interact with photographs – at least in this sort of venue. In 2013, I was hired by AIPAD to document the show. The idea of photographing people looking at photographs of people - or looking at landscapes, or still lifes, or any other subject - appeals to me. As a photographer, I am an observer. At the show I could observe how people interact with photography, how they look at photographic prints, how close they stand to the art, how they handle actual prints, what questions they pose to the dealers or discuss with others also viewing the show. I could watch to get a sense of what they “like” or care about. The show takes place each spring and for 2017 will move from the Park Avenue Armory to a new Manhattan space, Pier 94. http://www.aipad.com Photography by Judah S.
