C:\Documents And Settings\Donna Youraine\Desktop\Adoption Center\Paws Pet Ado...PAWS of Carteret
Year long renovation of the PAWS Pet Adoption Center in Morehead City, North Carolina. This building was donated to PAWS and a grant received specific for the renovation of it.
Every year over 6 million pets are euthanized due to overpopulation from people buying from breeders and not spaying or neutering their pets, leading to unwanted litters. Getting a pet should involve adopting from a shelter to avoid contributing to the problem, and spaying or neutering is important to prevent unwanted litters that end up in shelters and often euthanized.
The document describes a pet adoption center that rescues abandoned pets, provides them medical care, and helps them find new homes. Staff implant microchips in pets for identification and register potential adopters as members. Adopters must meet health and living requirements. The center uses a database to store pet and member information to help staff identify pets, retrieve records, and notify adopters. Adopters are interviewed to understand their needs and choose pets from an online catalog. The database tracks medical records, home visits, and statistics to improve operations.
Adopting a pet from an animal shelter is usually cheaper than buying from a breeder or pet store. Many pets end up in shelters because their owners were unprepared for the responsibilities of caring for them. Each year, hundreds of animals have to be euthanized in shelters because there are not enough homes available. Adopting helps reduce pet overpopulation and prevents animals from suffering or facing euthanasia.
Dogs living in shelters are often kept in small cages with no room to play or receive attention and love. Hundreds of lost or stray dogs end up in shelters each day due to owners being unable to be located, unwanted litters from breeders, sudden changes in owners' situations, and impulse purchases. It costs taxpayers $2 billion annually to house and euthanize homeless animals, with over 50% of dogs and puppies in shelters being euthanized. Adopting a pet from a shelter can help address the overpopulation problem.
This document discusses the process of adopting a pet. It emphasizes considering your lifestyle and what type of pet is suitable for your situation. The general adoption process involves visiting local animal shelters to find a pet, filling out applications, and waiting for approval. If approved, adopters pay a small fee and prepare their home before bringing the new pet home. The goal is finding a good match between pet and owner to prevent neglect and ensure the animal has a loving home.

Rescues and shelters provide care for abandoned and homeless animals with the goal of finding them new homes. Rescues are run primarily by volunteers and focus on adoption, while shelters may house animals temporarily but can euthanize those not adopted within a certain period. The document then provides examples of several rescues and shelters in Manitoba, Canada, including Winnipeg Animal Services and P.A.W.S., and shares stories of individual animals that were rescued and fostered, such as Gabby, Rosie, Joe Murray, Cassie, Stella, Toby, Lily and Jack, Shasta, and Marigold.
The document is a collection of stories and descriptions about various family pets submitted by members of the Davimes family. It includes summaries of pets such as dogs named Juno, Johnny, Archie-Rose and Oreo as well as cats, birds and other animals that bring joy to their families.

On March 5, 2011 my friend Gill Gillono hosted a free screening of the film "Bold NAtive" at the Maekeen Room in Chicago. This event was also a fundraiser vegan bakesale/raffle for Dont Bully My Breed. We raised $1000.00 at the event and had an amazing time! This is the slideshow we presented after the film to show people about DBMB.
The newsletter summarizes recent events held by the Feliciana Animal Welfare Society (FAWS). It also highlights several cats and dogs that were recently adopted and found new forever homes.
This document summarizes the efforts of Keeshond rescuers to help dogs from a puppy mill breeding operation in New York called Marjorie's Kennel. In 2013, over 100 Keeshonden were rescued from the kennel as the breeder agreed to retire. However, in 2014 she went back on the agreement and refused to release the remaining 50+ dogs. The rescuers have campaigned publicly through social media, letters, and the news to pressure the state of New York to enforce laws and free the dogs. Their ongoing mission is to rescue all the Keeshonden still at the kennel despite facing obstacles.
The document introduces several dogs available for adoption at the Southside SPCA shelter in Meherrin, Virginia. It describes the dogs' backgrounds and personalities, including that some have been at the shelter for years, were abused or neglected by previous owners, or have medical conditions. It encourages adopting homeless pets from shelters, donating to shelters, and spaying/neutering pets to reduce overpopulation and the number of animals euthanized each year. It notes most dogs featured are available for adoption, sponsorship or fostering, and there are many more dogs waiting at the shelter.
Dogs have evolved communication skills through domestication that allow them to interpret human gestures like pointing better than other animals like chimpanzees. Research shows that dogs understand when humans can see them and will try to attract their owner's attention to hidden items or share information when they see a direct benefit. Dogs also demonstrate abilities like associating objects with locations, reasoning by exclusion, and expecting consistency from objects. However, dogs do not generalize rules in the same way as humans. [/SUMMARY]
1) The author began with one pet bird purchased for her children, which led to acquiring seven birds over time through persistence from her kids. This created noise issues and required multiple cages.
2) Some of the birds did not get along or died, leading the author to give away the noisy sun conures to a zoo. She still had three birds remaining.
3) The author realized that birds are meant to fly freely and that long term pet bird ownership often ends in the birds suffering from rehoming or the owner no longer being able to care for them. She advises people not to purchase birds as pets.

2. Raffiki pounces into his
cheetah print cat tube as he
chases after a mouse toy that
was thrown in. Adopted from
an animal shelter about a
year ago at the age of 1, he
came into his new home with
fear of everything. However,
after his owners had worked
with him, Raffiki blossomed
into a new cat. His owners
even say, “If you had seen
him a year ago, you wouldn’t
believe it was him!”
3. Raffiki’s owner takes him for a walk along the outside of the house.
Although it may seem strange to walk a cat on a leash, it is for his own
safety to ensure he does not run away. Because Raffiki was adopted, he must
be watched over with a little more attention. His owners adopted him from
and event similar to the one at Johns Gannon’s Pet Resort.
4. Cars cram into the parking lot and line up and down the road to attend the John
Gannon’s Pet Resort Animal Adoption Day on November 9th, 2014. Just like
Raffiki, many animals have the potential to be adopted and brought into loving
homes. Although from the outside it appears to be peaceful, inside the event there
is utter chaos with over 80 cats and dogs awaiting their adoption.
5. Inside the John Gannon’s
pet adoption, there are
two rooms; one with dogs
and one with cats. In the
dog room, the animals
are more free. They run
around on leashes and
play in pens where
potential adoptees’ can
interact with them.
However, in the cat room
they are put into cages.
6. Although Pumpkin (Right) and Sadie (Left) appear to not be the
happiest, when taken out of the cage they come to life. Kittens like
theses two need homes where they can run free and play.
7. Kristen (center) talks to potential owners as they look at the kittens in front of
them. Kristen fosters all the cats and kittens at her own home. She has about
16 and brings them to events like this one. However, she says that she can no
longer take cats into her home to foster unless people start adopting them.
This problem of overcrowding is also happening in a lot of other kennels.
8. Many animals that are
up for adoption have
not been treated
properly. Dotie, this
beautiful wide-eye cat
was found on the side of
the road. He clearly had
signs of abuse and was
very malnourished. Just
as Raffiki, Kristen says
that he was terrified
during human
interaction. However,
when given the proper
love, he became one of
her friendliest cats.
9. Even Dotie’s name tag says he is very friendly
regardless of what he has gone through.
10. During the adoption event, people gathered around Lily (Left) and Boo (Right) to
hear their amazing story and watch over them as they sleep. Theses two angels were
found outside chained to a fence with no shelter. Their bodies still show signs of
scars and Lilies ears are torn apart. However, someone got inspired by their story
and decided to adopt them both. They no longer have to worry about their past, but
now can enjoy their new home and live as happily as a dog can.
11. There is also the case that an
animal up for adoption is
disabled. Sophie had to have
both of her eyes removed due
to infection when she was
just a puppy and she is now
waiting near the door for her
new family that can give her
the attention she needs, to
walk in. Although she is being
fostered, there are also other
dogs in the household. She
needs to be part of a family
that she is the main attention
of. However, just because
Sophie is disabled does not
mean she cannot be a loving
pet! She walks right up to
people and plays with them
just as a normal dog would.
12. Sadly, not all stories have a happy ending. Sometimes an animal has not found their
match with an owner. Its important that any potential owners go to events such as
this one. Their perfect match for a pet may be there and may need their help.
Although Oreo (center) was not abused or disabled, he was not adopted. He seemed
very eager to get out of the pen and jumped towards anyone that walked by begging
to be picked up.
13. Oreos brothers are also
full of energy and could
not stop playing with the
tennis ball for a second so
a picture could be taken.
They plan on attending
another event next week
and hopefully there they
are able to find homes
that fit their needs. Even if
owners want a animal, in
order to adopt them they
must fill out applications
to ensure that the pet’s
personality matches the
adopters. Some even
require home visits and
random check ups to
ensure the safety of the
adopted pets.
14. When an animal is matched up
with an owner that is a perfect
match for them, the animal is no
longer just an animal. The animal
is now a pet. The pet is given a
second chance to be loved, and
the owner will have a loyal
companion that could never
thank them enough or leave their
side. Janice sits on the floor
hugging Coco who she just
adopted. Janice says that the
second she had seen him she
knew he was the one. Many other
animals that were not
appreciated before, found their
owners at the Jon Gannon’s Pet
Resort Adoption Day. However,
there are many others that still
need to be adopted. Second hand
animals make first class pets,
they just need to be given a
chance.
