Edward T. Hall identified four types of personal distance in interactions: intimate distance is very close contact from 0-18 inches; personal distance is a closer interaction from 18 inches to 4 feet; social distance is a typical conversation distance of 4 to 12 feet; and public distance is for presentations and larger audiences from 12 to 25+ feet or more.
