Student Council members at Perry Heights school are leading an energy conservation program to help the school save money and the environment. They presented a plan to the principal to reduce energy usage by only using emergency hallway lights during class time, installing sensors in the restrooms, and providing teachers with tips to conserve energy like using only one row of lights. The students are also organizing a campaign to promote energy conservation awareness throughout the school.

Through
the
EVSC's
Conservation

Education
program,
Perry
Heights
students
presented
Principal
Charles
Goodman
with
their
ideas
and
created
their
own
plan
to
help
the
school
reduce
energy
usage
and
ultimately
save
money
and
the
environment.
As
part
of
their
program,
students
collected
and
presented
data
on
how
many
lights
are
in
hallways
at
Perry
Heights
and
how
many
hours
during
the
day
they
are
used.
Students
suggested
only
using
emergency
lights
in
the
hallway
during
class
time,
which
would
mean
that
the
hallway
lights
were
only
on
during
passing
periods,
which
would
amount
to
only
33
minutes
each
2. day.
In
addition,
the
students
have
inquired
about
installing
sensors
in
the
restrooms
that
automatically
come
on
when
someone
enters
and
turn
off
when
they
leave.
Students
didn't
stop
there.
They
created
a
list
of
tips
teachers
can
use
in
their
rooms
to
reduce
electrical
usage
as
well
such
as
only
using
one
row
of
lights,
keeping
the
Promethean
boards
off
when
not
in
use
and
opening
blinds
to
utilize
natural
light.
The
team
also
is
planning
a
campaign
to
promote
energy
conservation
awareness
at
the
school.
Does
your
school
have
an
interesting
idea
for
spreading
the
word
on
energy
conservation?
If
so,
let
us
know.
