Today we're going to be talking about the... OS: Android Device: Nexus One NUI: Voice App: Edwin - Android
Voice recognition technology has undergone an upswing in popularity lately, probably due to the increased ease of use, accuracy, and reliability in the technologies its implemented in. One of these is Google's Voice Action, which comes pre-installed on droid 2 and later. Voice Action uses certain keywords for the user to perform tasks, like emailing, calling, navigating, or searching. 19
The keywords used in Voice Actions are: * send text to * listen to * call * send email to * go to * note to self * navigate/directions to * map of Most of these keywords can have multiple uses like naming a business, a contact, or a location. 20
However, there has been some consumer dissatisfaction with Voice Action, mostly due to the limitations imposed by the keywords. When a user attempts to use a keyword, they end up having to think, and generally, people get frustrated when they have to think when they speak. Speaking is supposed to be effortless, and its difficult for it to be so when only certain words can be used in the application. 20
Voice recognition has many useful applications. It especially shines in the area of multitasking. Multitasking users are typically busy people who are always on the move, and need their tasks to be done quickly, efficiently, and well, and sometimes that means without using their hands. To these types of people voice technology proves itself invaluable. 19
Voice technology can also have many educational and medical benefits. For example, it is revolutionizing the way physically disabled people can interact with technology. People who are blind, paralyzed, or have otherwise lost the use of their hands can now simply speak their questions, commands, or thoughts to a phone and have it reply back to them. 18
For those of us who are neither extremely busy or physically disabled, voice technology also has a more common everyday benefit: as an alternative to texting while driving. Texting and driving is a leading cause of vehicle accidents, and voice technology can significantly reduce that danger by enabling free use of the hands and keeping attention less divided. 21
Another speech-to-speech app is called Edwin, only offered for the Android Marketplace, not iOs, and its also free to download. The Edwin app is very simple to use and minimizes the use of hands to operate, and best of all, no special keywords are necessary. The user can employ more colloquial language and ask Edwin virtually any question that comes to mind.
Edwin is geo-aware, which means when you ask it “Where am I?”, “What time is it”, or “What's the weather” the answer will be with regards to the current city you are in, and when you ask, say, where the nearest pizza joint is, it will reply with the one nearest to your location. It can also open applications, make phone calls, and send texts. 19
As an added bonus Edwin has a sense of humor. If you say "What is the meaning of life, Edwin will reply with "42", a reference to Douglas Adams famous book “A Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy”. If you say I love you Edwin will say to you “sadly, i was not designed to love. But if i could, I would love you.” 22
