PCNA President Barbara Fletcher Comments on Lowered Heart Attack and Stroke
Rates
Data published in a recent issue of Circulation stated that rates of U.S. hospitalizations and deaths from
heart disease and stroke dropped significantly in the last decade. The data describes that by the end of
2011, hospitalization rates dropped 38% for heart attack; 30.5% for heart failure; and 33.6% for ischemic
stroke. PCNA President Barbara Fletcher’s comments on the new data were enthusiastic and optimistic.
“This news provides us great momentum to continue moving forward in the fight against the leading killer
of both men and women. We at PCNA are committed to supporting the work of nurses and all health
professionals working with patients to make and sustain lifestyle changes, adhere to evidence-based
treatment regimens, and act as full partners in their own care.”
New On-Demand ACS Patient Medication Adherence Course Added
Adherence to professional guidelines by healthcare professionals in the management of patients with
acute coronary syndrome (ACS) remains suboptimal despite the fact that the implementation of
professional guidelines into treatment strategies has been shown to improve outcomes in patients with
ACS post-hospitalization. In addition, patient adherence to therapy is also suboptimal. Clinicians can
improve patient adherence by learning about patient-related factors of nonadherence to therapy and

addressing those factors with their patients.
Participants will learn to implement evidence-based options recommended in professional guidelines for
antithrombotic therapy in ACS patients, use achieved knowledge of antithrombotic options to manage
ACS patients post-hospitalization, and identify issues involving communication gaps between patient
advocates and patients diagnosed with ACS.

September 24th is Familial Hypercholesterolemia
Awareness Day!
On September 24th, 2014, the FH Foundation will raise
awareness of familial hypercholesterolemia worldwide with
the One Minute to Save One Family Campaign: It only takes a
minute to share information that can save a family from early
heart disease. Find the 1 person in 200 who has inherited high
cholesterol, or familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), and you will
help an entire family prevent early heart attacks caused by this
common, but underrecognized genetic disorder. Help us reach
the 90% undiagnosed by sharing the FH Awareness Day Media
Kit, downloadable here: www.thefhfoundation.org/fh-
awareness-day.
PCNA Wants YOU to Submit Your Abstract

Sessions on Friday, April 10. For more information on how to submit your abstract, click here.
Million Hearts Hypertension Control Challenge Nomination Submissions
Nearly 1,000 people die each day in the United States as a result of high blood pressure-related illnesses.
The latest data show that nearly 1 in 3 American adults - approximately 70 million - have high blood
pressure.
Since its launch, Million Hearts has recognized 11 Hypertension Control Champions for their success in
achieving greater than 70 percent control among their patient populations with high blood pressure.
This year, Million Heats wants to recognize even more Hypertension Control Champions. Clinicians,
practices, and health systems that provide continuing care and have achieved hypertension control rates
greater than 70 percent are eligible to enter. Please help Million Hearts spread the word about what it
takes to get high blood pressure under control.
