History 
• The city’s history really began in the 3rd 
century BC. 
• A tribe, Parisii, took residence along the 
Seine river. 
• In 52 BC, Caesar sent his troops to crush 
the Gauls, known as the Battle of Lutetia. 
• In the 4th century, Lutetia became a 
garrison town for troops fighting the 
Barbarians on the northern and eastern 
frontiers of Gaul.. The city moved to the 
Île de la Cité which was fortified and 
renamed Paris.
Black Death 
• One of the most devastating infectious 
disease in human history. 
• Yersinia pestis , found in fleas carried by 
ground rodents, including marmots, in 
various areas including Central Asia, 
Kurdistan, Western Asia, Northern India and 
Uganda. 
• Killing nearly 75 to 200 million people, 
peaking in Europe in the years 1346–53. 
• Estimated to have killed 30–60% of Europe's 
total population, reducing the estimated 
world population from a 450 million to 350- 
375 million in the 14th century. 
• The aftermath of the plague created a series 
of religious, social, and economic upheavals.
Renaissance 
• The word "Renaissance" is 
a French word, whose literal translation 
into English is "Rebirth“. 
• It was the cultural and artistic 
movement in France between the 15th 
and early 17th centuries. 
• It was first used by the French 
historian Jules Michelet to define the 
artistic and cultural "rebirth" of Europe. 
• The French Renaissance traditionally 
extends from the French invasion of 
Italy in 1494 during the reign of Charles 
VIII until the death of Henry IV in 1610.
Napoleon 
• Is a French military and 
political leader who 
rose to prominence 
during the latter stages 
of the French 
Revolution and its 
associated wars in 
Europe. 
• He implemented a 
wide array of 
liberal reforms across 
Europe. 
• Napoleon was 
imprisoned and then 
exiled to the island 
of Saint Helena in the 
Atlantic Ocean. 
• Later, died on 5th May 
1821.
Marie Antoinette 
• Born as an Archduchess of Austria, 
was Dauphine of France from 1770 to 
1774 and Queen of France and 
Navarre from 1774 to 1792 
• Upon her marriage to Louis- 
Auguste, Dauphin of France, she 
became Dauphine of France. 
• Marie Antoinette is often considered to 
be a part of popular culture and a 
major historical figure, being the 
subject of several books, films and 
other forms of media

 Codified in the 20th century by Georges 
Auguste Escoffier to become the modern 
version of haute cuisine

 Cheese and wine form an important aspect 
apart from its traditional food and bread 
 In November 2010, French gastronomy was 
added by the UNESCO to its lists of the world’s 
“intangible cultural heritage”
