Editor's Notes

  • #2 After Jesus cleared the temple, the Religious Leaders were angry. They said to Jesus, ‘Who said you could do this?’. So Jesus told them this parable. There was a man. He was a farmer.
  • #3 This farmer planted a vineyard. Then he went away for quite some time.
  • #4 He then leased the farm to some tenants. It wasn’t the tenants vineyard. It was still the owners. But the tenants could work the farm. They could take some of the grapes. But they had to give the owner some of the grapes.
  • #5 Now, the tenants who leased the farm were bad tenants – the tenants from hell, really.
  • #6 So it came time for the farmer to collect his share of the grapes.
  • #7 So he sent one of his servants.
  • #8 The servant was going to ask the tenants for the owner’s fair share of the grapes.
  • #9 But the tenants were mean and evil. They bashed up the servant.
  • #10 And they sent him back to the farmer with nothing but bruises, black eyes, and bandages.
  • #11 The servant came back to the farmer. So the farmer sent another servant.
  • #12 The farmer sent this second servant to the tenants.
  • #13 He was going to ask for the owner’s share of the grapes.
  • #14 But the mean tenants bashed this other servant up also.
  • #15 They treated him shamefully and sent him back to the farmer.
  • #16 So the farmer said. I know what I will do.
  • #17 I will send another servant.
  • #18 He will ask for my share of the grapes.
  • #19 But to this third servant, the tenants were mean as well.
  • #20 They hurt him, and threw him out.
  • #21 Now, what would the Master of the Vineyard say? What will I do? I know!
  • #22 I will send my Son. My much loved Son. Maybe the tenants will respect him. Now, what do you think the tenants will do? Do you think the tenants will respect the Son?
  • #23 The Tenants said to each other, ‘Look, this is the Master’s Son. He is the one who is going to own this vineyard. All this vineyard will belong to him one day. So let’s kill him. Then this vineyard will be ours.
  • #24 So those mean, wicked tenants, through the Son out of the Vineyard and killed him.
  • #25 What do you think the Master of the Vineyard will do now?
  • #26 Jesus said, the Master of the Vineyard will come and destroy those tenants.
  • #27 Now, this story was a parable. Jesus told it to explain what was going to happen to him. The Master of the Vineyard was God.
  • #28 So who is the Son of the Master of the Vineyard? That’s right, it is Jesus.
  • #29 And the Vineyard is God’s special place, the promised land, and particularly Jerusalem.
  • #30 The wicked tenants were the Religious Leaders in Jerusalem. They did not want Jesus to be King over them. So they rejected him.
  • #31 And Jesus died on the cross because the wicked religious leaders rejected him. But God had it all under control.
  • #32 For God would punish the those wicked tenants. He would take the vineyard away from them.
  • #33 And he would give the vineyard to others. And we need to remember that we must not reject Jesus as God’s Son. Jesus has authority because he is God’s Beloved Son. The special city of Jerusalem belongs to Him. The nation of Israel belongs to him. And indeed the whole world belongs to him. And those who reject Jesus will be punished. But those he recognised that Jesus has been sent from God will share his inheritance forever.
