During Jesus' time, Palestine was occupied by the Romans and Jews were under Roman rule. Jews suffered from heavy taxation under King Herod's rule. There were also religious differences and conflicts among Jews. Jesus lived in this context and upheld important Jewish traditions and places of worship like the synagogue and temple in Jerusalem. However, he taught that the true spirit of the Jewish law is love.

the Shema- their creed of faith.

The seventh day of the week was set aside
by the Jews for rest and worship.
This is the Sabbath day. During the time of
Jesus, keeping the Sabbath was very
complicated because of the strict rules and
legalistic attitude of the Pharisees and
Scribes in keeping the Sabbath. "The Sabbath
was made for man, not man for the Sabbath."

Jews observed national and religious celebrations
with thanksgiving and joyous feasting.
The feasts of the Jews had a strong communal
character since they believed that their unity as
one nation depended on their being called by God
into a covenant.
The greatest of their feasts was the Passover- the
Jewish miraculous liberation from Egypt.

25. Jesus Upheld the Torah
The Torah, which is the Jewish name for the
"Law," is made up of the First five books of the
Old Testament.
The Torah is also called by its Greek name- the
Pentateuch The Torah represents the heart of the
Jewish religion.
Jesus showed that the true spirit of the Law is love.
We follow them because we love God and our
neighbor.
