Sir Syed Ahmad Khan established the Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College (MAO College) in Aligarh in 1875 to promote Western education among Indian Muslims and reconcile Islamic beliefs with science and rational thinking. This led to the Aligarh Movement, which aimed to uplift Muslims socially, educationally, and politically after the 1857 rebellion. The Movement created a unified Muslim identity and consciousness in India through the promotion of Urdu, the establishment of schools, and the Muhammadan Educational Conference. Aligarh Muslim University became a center of Muslim politics and intellectual thought, laying the foundations for the eventual establishment of Pakistan.
