1. ISLAMABAD:
The apex drug regulator,
after completing a process
digitally listing all registered
products, has launched a
web portal where people can
access the database of
medicines in the country.
According to the Drug
Regulatory Authority of
Pakistan (Drap), their Pharma-
ceutical Evaluation and Regis-
tration Division had created a
provisional database after
starting a computerisation
process for the 40-year-old
manual drug registration
record earlier this year.
A spokesperson for Drap said
that the public, healthcare
officials, can use the data-
base, available on Drap’s
website (www.dra.gov.pk),
to check the registration
number, proprietary or
brand, generics with compo-
sition, the name of manufac-
turer or importer.
Apart from the database, the
official said that they had
introduced a WHO-CTD
format for drug registration
dossiers, 2-D barcodes on
labels, mandatory GMP
certified source of raw
materials, the establishment
of pharmaco-vigilance
system would help provide
quality drugs in the market
and allow patients to spot
fake or spurious drugs.
“These steps have put few
culprits [involved in the
manufacture of spurious
drugs] in trouble and they
are trying to malign the
officials of Drap and the
ministry of health through
baseless complaints and
thus to divert public and
agencies attention from
their misdeeds.”

WEEKLY PHARMA NEWSLETTER
ISLAMABAD: The Drug Regula-
tory Authority of Pakistan (Drap)
on Saturday decided to direct
health departments across the
country to recall the synthetic
recombinant bovine somato
tropin (RBST) injection used for
increasing the production of
milk in cattle.
The decision was taken after the
Supreme Court of Pakistan va-
cated a stay granted against the
ban of the hormone injection by
the Sindh High Court.
According to a
s t a t e m e n t
issued by the
Ministry of
National Health
Services, the
apex court vacated the stay
against the cancellation of the
registration of the RBST injection
by Drap.
The injection is mainly used to
increase production of milk in
cows.

4. The anti-dengue vaccine recently sus-
pended in Philippines was
registered in Pakistan on the
recommendations of World Health
Organization, said Drug Regulatory
Authority Pakistan chief on Thursday.
The Chief Executive Officer DRAP,
Dr. Aslam Afghani said this in a press
briefing held here about the three
year performance of the drug
regulatory institution.
Dr. Aslam said that anti -
dengue vaccine (Sanofi) was
registered nearly six months earlier
and included the recommendations
of WHO. He said the company ap-
plied for the registration more than a
pines, adverse reaction of the drug
was observed in children,” he said.
The risky anti-dengue vaccine (Sanofi)
was administered to more than
730000 children in Philippines which
put the children’s lives in danger.
WHO in December last year had sus-
pended the administration of
the vaccine and announced to probe
the matter.
Pakistan Young Pharmacist Associa-
tion (PYPA) and Pakistan Drug Law-
yers Forum (PDLF) accused the DRAP
officials for registration of the
said vaccine allegedly against
financial benefits from the company.

A private hospital in Karachi has con-
firmed 28 cases of the H1N1 (seasonal
influenza A), with several other patients
complaining of symptoms similar to
that of the deadly disease.
Isolation wards have been set up in
private hospitals in view of reports of
the outbreak, however, no case has
been reported in the public hospitals as
yet.
Common symptoms of flu are cough,
runny nose, fever, and generalised
fatigue.
Flu test is very expensive, on average
costing Rs7,000 per test, and not of-
fered in most labs in the country.
Testing is therefore only done on the
severely ill and on patients who can
afford it.
H1N1 (seasonal influenza A) is a deadly
disease which can spread through con-
tact with the bacteria discharged by an
infected person’s coughing and sneez-
ing. Pregnant women, senior citizens,
and children are susceptible to the dis-
ease.
Pollution due to widespread
construction of roads and buildings, is a
major reason accounting to the in-
crease in breathing issues as well as the
H1N1 epidemic .
