The Maryville Spoofhounds baseball team defeated Pembroke Hill 2-1 in extra innings in a tightly contested game. Senior pitcher Mitchell Worthington threw over 100 pitches in 7 shutout innings before being relieved. The game remained scoreless until the top of the 9th inning when Pembroke Hill scored a run. However, in the bottom of the 9th Maryville was able to rally, with Jacob Cacek reaching on a hit followed by a walk and another hit to load the bases. Trey Hoover then hit a two-run single to walk off the victory for Maryville. The win was an important one that could spark a turnaround in the Spoofhounds' season.

After dropping the ball
in the last two nailbiters,
Maryville Spoofhounds
Baseball Head Coach Matt
Houchin was pleased to see
his players hold on for the
April 7 win against Pembroke
Hill in the nine-inning show-
down. The Hounds won 2-1
in extra innings, giving up
one run in the top of the
ninth but scoring two them-
selves for the victory.
“We’ve had two tough
ones recently and we’ve
dropped them in the last
inning,” Houchin said. “This
time we stayed the course
and we knew we could get
something done. There in the
bottom of the ninth and we
were getting runners on, it
just felt like, ‘okay, here we
go.’”
Going scoreless for eight
straight innings was a mat-
ter of good defense on both
sides of the ball, led on by
superb pitching. Pembroke
Hill’s lefty was slower than
most pitchers Maryville sees,
but the Hounds still had
trouble with not being accus-
tomed to a left-handed style.
“It comes down to us just
needing to see more pitch-
ing like that to get used to
batting against it,” Houchin
said.
On Maryville’s side, it was
senior Mitchell Worthington
who led the first seven
innings to throw over 100
pitches in his shutout per-
formance. Houchin had his
moments of wonder wheth-
er or not he should pull
Worthington or not, but put
his faith in the senior when
Worthington said he wasn’t
ready to come out.
“After 75-80 pitches, I
thought it was time for him
to come out,” Houchin said
of Worthington. “What I love
is Mitch’s confidence and his
desire for one more inning.
And if he wants one more
inning, I think I owe it to him
as a senior leader for another
shot at it.”
Jakob Woods was the
closing pitcher and held
Pembroke scoreless in the
eighth inning. In the top of
the ninth, a high drive past
the glove of left field, fol-
lowed later by a walk put
Pembroke into scoring posi-
tion with a low drive into
right field, bringing in the
single run before the Hounds
could close the top of the
inning.
In the bottom, a high
drive into left by Jacob Cacek
put Maryville on first base.
Dakota Beemer would be the
relief runner and stole second
right off, as John Zimmerman
would get the walk followed
by a hit to left field by Alex
Bean to load the bases. Up
to bat next was Trey Hoover
who had a walk and a sin-
gle against Pembroke Hill.
A low drive past the short-
stop was just what Beemer
and Zimmerman needed to
reach home on the two-run
single for Maryville to take
the walkoff victory.
The win gives Maryville
its first home win in a num-
ber of years, which could be
the spark the Hounds need
to turn this season around.
