This document provides notation and details on a sinogram interpolation technique. It begins by defining notation for continuous and discrete indices used to represent images and sinograms. It then describes how sinograms are formed from images through the forward Radon transform, representing projections of an image at different angles. Warps are introduced as weighted cosine waves that pass through sinogram elements, with conditions defined for valid warps. The algorithm steps are outlined as calculating warp properties from the original image, setting up an equation system to solve for warp weights, and reconstructing sinogram columns from the warps. The technique aims to improve blurry sinograms by exploiting known image properties represented by the warps.

VSA needed to consolidate its two smaller offices in New York into one larger space to accommodate future growth. Brian was tasked with finding an affordable space in a creative neighborhood that would appeal to employees and clients. He thoroughly researched all viable options, including those not publicly listed. This allowed him to quickly secure VSA a long-term lease in Hudson Square, an area desired by creative firms. The financial terms were below market rates and allowed for initial occupancy of a portion of the space with options to expand later. VSA's COO praised Brian for his communication and ability to understand their goals to ease anxiety during the relocation process.

This document discusses typography in design and provides sources for further information on the topic. It introduces typography in design and provides contact information for Jacqueline Scott from Central High School in St. Joseph, Missouri. It also lists five websites that contain resources on screen fonts, inspirational typographic poster designs, typography blogs, general typography information and a newspage designer photo list.
Vector graphics are made up of points and paths rather than pixels. They are commonly used for typography, shapes, and illustrations. Pixel graphics are composed of small color squares called pixels and are typically used for photos. Illustrator uses vectors while Photoshop uses pixels. InDesign allows using both vector and pixel graphics in page layouts.
This document is a collection of articles and illustrations about vector graphics from various contributors. It includes pieces on vector vs. pixel, health topics, music festivals, and biographies. The sources provided are links to an online portfolio website where the full works can be found under each contributor's username. The document aims to showcase different works utilizing vector graphic design.
This document provides guidance on conducting interviews for journalism. It outlines best practices such as preparing questions in advance, making appointments, introducing yourself to interviewees, and beginning interviews with an opening question to make the interviewee comfortable. It describes using different types of questions like factual, numerical, and open-ended questions to obtain different kinds of information. The document also presents the G-O-S-S-E-Y framework for in-depth questioning and emphasizes the importance of listening, soliciting quotes and anecdotes, asking follow-up questions, and concluding interviews professionally.
The document discusses several Supreme Court cases that shaped students' First Amendment rights in schools. It summarizes the key rulings in Tinker v. Des Moines (1969), which established that students' free speech rights do not end at the schoolhouse gate, and Hazelwood v. Kuhlmeier (1988), which gave schools more authority to censor school-sponsored student media. It also briefly discusses Bethel v. Fraser (1986) and Morse v. Frederick (2007) and their impacts. The document aims to educate student journalists on their legal rights and responsibilities regarding censorship and content restrictions in student media.
The document is a photography quiz testing knowledge of camera functions and darkroom processes. It contains multiple choice and true/false questions about camera settings like ISO, shutter speed, and aperture that affect exposure, as well as darkroom techniques like developing, fixing, and rinsing photographic paper. The quiz covers topics like how different camera settings impact exposure and blurring of backgrounds, as well as the chemicals and processes used to develop black and white photographs.
The document discusses three essential camera settings - ISO, shutter speed, and aperture - that photographers should understand in order to take better pictures. It defines each setting and explains how they affect exposure and image quality. ISO controls the camera's light sensitivity, shutter speed determines how long the camera's "eye" is open, and aperture refers to the size of the lens opening. The document emphasizes that these settings are interrelated and changing one may require adjusting another to achieve proper exposure. Understanding how they work together allows photographers greater creative control over their images.
This document outlines the rules and tasks for a photography scavenger hunt. Students must take photos exploring different camera settings, including ISO, shutter speed, and aperture in both low light and high light conditions. They are instructed to record the settings for each photo and note any problems. The goal is to understand how changing settings impacts exposure and to practice capturing various photographic effects and compositions.
The document discusses pinhole photography using a homemade pinhole camera. It can be made from any enclosed dark space with a small pinhole opening to allow light. To take a photo, electrical tape is placed over the opening and a pinhole is poked through. Photo paper is loaded in the dark, the camera is exposed to the subject for varying times depending on lighting, then the paper is developed like normal in a darkroom. Pinhole cameras allow creating photos using the camera obscura effect with simple, homemade materials.
Photograms are photographic images created by placing objects directly onto light-sensitive paper and exposing it to light, without using a camera. Pioneered in the early 20th century, photograms produce reverse shadow images of objects and were an influential art form developed by photographers like Man Ray. Contemporary photographers continue to explore photograms as an experimental photographic technique.
The document discusses identifying the six main news elements - who, what, when, where, why and how - in news articles. Readers are asked to name the six elements and then analyze today's newspaper, finding examples of each element in different articles and explaining their reasoning for identifying each instance. The task aims to define and apply knowledge of the core components of a news story.
The document provides instructions for a news analysis assignment, asking students to choose an article from the day's newspaper, glue it into their news journal, and answer questions about the article's topic, use of news elements, any quotes, and impact. It repeats the same instructions three times.

This document provides guidance for an assignment analyzing the concept of news. It asks students to define news, identify different categories of news stories, and recognize key news events from history. It also prompts students to consider how life would be without access to news and how news reporting has changed over time with the emergence of new media technologies. The assignment involves both short-form critical thinking questions and longer essay responses analyzing different aspects of how news is defined, reported on, and consumed.
1) Students are assigned a peer to interview for a class assignment.
2) They are instructed to observe their partner for 30 seconds before asking questions.
3) Students then prepare 7-10 open-ended questions on a specific topic of their choice to learn more about their partner.
4) Partners take turns interviewing one another using tips for effective interviewing.
The document provides tips for conducting interviews as part of a reporting process. It advises observing the interviewee's appearance and body language. Reporters should research the topic beforehand and have open-ended questions prepared based on the chosen angle. The interview should be scheduled in advance and introduced as part of a school publication class. Additional follow up questions may be asked based on responses. The goal is to make the interviewee feel relaxed so they provide better answers, similar to speed dating. Interviews should conclude by allowing the person to add anything else and thanking them for their time.
This document provides a note-taking guide for defining key concepts in news reporting, including listing five news sources and the six main types of news: timeliness, proximity, prominence, consequence, human interest, and conflict. It asks the reader to define these terms in their own words and identifies that "Journalism is the first rough draft of history" is a quote examining the role of journalism in documenting history.
The document provides guidelines for students to create a timeline of the major events in the history of journalism in the United States as part of a class project. It specifies that the timeline must include 15 events created using Adobe Indesign, with each event including a description, date, location, individuals involved, and importance. It also lists several websites as references and notes the timeline will be graded on following the guidelines and choosing relevant historical events.
American journalism has evolved greatly since the first newspaper publications in the late 17th century. Early newspapers faced censorship and oppression from British colonists and risked legal punishment for criticizing government officials. A pivotal court case established the defense of truth against libel claims. During the Revolutionary War, partisan newspapers helped incite rebellion against Britain. The Bill of Rights protected freedom of the press. Technological advances like the telegraph, photography and radio further transformed the industry. Investigative journalism known as "muckraking" exposed social problems and helped spur reforms in the early 20th century. The internet is now the dominant source of news worldwide.
Photography evolved over centuries through experimentation with camera obscuras and light-sensitive materials. Joseph Niépce created the first permanent photograph in 1826 called a heliograph. Louis Daguerre then invented the daguerreotype process in 1837 which sharply reduced exposure times. William Henry Fox Talbot invented the calotype process in 1841, enabling photographic reproductions. George Eastman later developed roll film and the Kodak camera, making photography widely accessible.
The document discusses photography and what makes a successful photograph. It lists key elements like lighting, subject matter/content, exposure, and composition. It then provides an assignment for students to analyze several famous photographs based on these elements - who took it, what is the subject/message, their thoughts on composition and exposure, and how lighting affects the mood. Students are to analyze photographs by Alfred Stieglitz, Lewis Hine, Man Ray, and others from 1907 to 1999.

NewspaperFlint Hills Publication Workshop 2013
Instructor- Jackie Scott
For each section, look through the entire newspaper/ newsmagazine and answer the questions as thoroughly as possible.
When you present out you will be expected to show specific examples from the publication that explain your thoughts.
Keep in mind that when critiquing no answers are wrong, however, some are more thorough and educated than others.
Simply saying “we don’t like the way the cover looks” is not a thorough or educated answer. You MUST explain why you
have that opinion and what you would change about the design to improve your opinion.
ReDesign Critique
Cover
1.Does the cover make you want to read the paper? Why
or why not? What could be done differently?
2.Are basic rules of design followed (dominance, alignment,
eye lines, white space, contrast, etc.) and is the overall
cover design successful?
Content
1.Is the content presented in multiple formats to help attract
reader interest?
2.Do the layouts enhance the content and make it easier to
find or do they detract from the content? How could this be
corrected or, if is successful, what design techniques are
used that you would like to incorporate in your own publica-
tions?
3.Are there numerous examples of content packaging,
info graphics, short stories and other non-traditional forms
of content being utilized in the publication? If so, are they
successful? Why or why not? If not, how could more be
incorporated?
Design
3.Are basic rules of design followed (dominance, align-
ment, eye lines, white space, contrast, etc.) and is the
overall design of the publication successful? What specific
design elements are strengths for this publication? (Ex. The
designs do an excellent job of conveying dominance and
creating eye lines on the page).
4.What, if any, pages/ sections in this publication really
stand out to you as being well designed? Why?
Branding/ Consistency in Design
1.As you turn through the pages of the publication, is it
evident that all pages are a part of the same publication (in
other words is there a consistent design theme)? What are
the design themes you notice in the publication? Are they
successful? Why/ why not?
2. Advanced ReDesign
NewspaperFlint Hills Publication Workshop 2013
Instructor- Jackie Scott
2.Does the publication have a consistent logo, flag, folio
text, etc. that helps further the branding (design theme) of
the publication? What are they? Are they successful? If
yes, why? If not, what would make them more successful?
Packaging
1.Does the publication package content successfully? Why
or why not? Please list examples.
2.What is the most successful packaging design in this
publication? How could you incorporate this technique into
your publication?
Use of Photos and Graphics
1.Do all photos and graphics in the publication further the
content and help tell the story? Why/ why not?
2.Are the photos and graphics used in the publication
interesting, well-designed and informative or are they just
thrown in to take up space? Why/ why not?
Typography
1.What fonts are used in the publication (you don’t have to
be specific- just serif, sans serif, decorative, etc. would be
fine)?
2.Do these fonts work well together or are they distracting
to the content?
3.Is the use of fonts consistent throughout the publica-
tion? If yes- how? If no- what could be done to correct the
problem?
Overall
1.What could be done to make the publication more reader
friendly?
2.If you had to name ONE thing that could be changed to
improve this publication what would it be and how would
you go about changing it as a part of your redesign?
