Technology Integration:
why it is a good idea
Angela Swaggert
Why it is a good idea?
 Technology enables teachers to reinforce and
expand on a concept
 Technology supports 9 research-proven
instructional strategies
 Mobile devices increase the effectiveness of
technology in the classroom.
 Technology when implemented into instruction
has a strong positive impact on student
achievement
Technology enables teachers to
reinforce and expand on a concept
74%- indicated that technology allows them to
reinforce and expand on a concept by using online
lesson plans, web-based educational games, and
videos, images, and articles.
74%- indicated that technology helps to motivate
student to learn by using the same tools as above and
tablets and e-readers.
73%- indicated that technology allows them to respond
to a variety of different learning styles by accessing the
same tools above and more such as educational
application and education websites

Technology when implemented into instruction
has a strong positive impact on student
achievement
1. Effective professional development for teachers in the integration of technology
into instruction is necessary to support student learning.
2. Teachers’ direct application of technology must be aligned to local and/or state
curriculum standards.
3. Technology must be incorporated into the daily learning schedule (i.e., not as a
supplement or after-school tutorial).
4. Programs and applications must provide individualized feedback to students
and teachers and must have the ability to tailor lessons to individual student
needs.
5. Student collaboration in the use of technology is more effective in influencing
student achievement than strictly individual use.
6. Project-based learning and real-world simulations are more effective in
changing student motivation and achievement than drill-and-practice
applications.
7. Effective technology integration requires leadership, support, and modeling
from teachers, administrators, and the community/parents.

Editor's Notes

 • #2 In this presentation I will be showing you research that supports that the integration of technology in the classroom way exceeds the cost it is to the school district. I will be doing this by representation of collected data from various recourses.
 • #3 Technology has many benefits when integrated in to a classroom and school district. I will elaborate on each of these points with the data that I have collected. In the end my goal is for you to conceder making the step towards the integration of technology into our district schools and community.
 • #4 A national survey done by PBS Learning Media of pre-K-12 teachers produced results that directly indicate that the integration of technology in the classroom has had a positive influence on student’s success. Teachers surveyed reported that technology enables them to reinforce concepts and expand on curriculum, helps to motive students to learn, and respond to a variety of different learning styles. This survey also concluded that a majority of teachers expressed a need or want for more technology in the classroom. These are the results of this survey: 74%- indicated that technology allows them to reinforce and expand on a concept by using online lesson plans, web-based educational games, and videos, images, and articles. 74%- indicated that technology helps to motivate student to learn by using the same tools as above and tablets and e-readers.73%- indicated that technology allows them to respond to a variety of different learning styles by accessing the same tools above and more such as educational application and education websites I
 • #5 Here is an example of how this can be done with this short video of a math teacher reinforcing problem solving skills in a 5th grade class using technology.
 • #6 On the left you will see the9 instructional strategies that are vital to student success. On the right you will see the technologies that are available to support and improve success of these instructional strategies. Once implemented within a school district these technologies are easy to manipulate for both students and educators.
 • #7 This table represents the effectiveness of these of these nine strategies when technology is implemented within.
 • #8 I would like to share with you some ways mobile devices can aide our school district in the implementation of more technology. These are 5 ways that mobile devices are becoming more effective and affordable in the classroom..1. Portability: Mobile devices offer portability in such a way as to change the pattern of learning or work activity (Laurillard, 2007; Sharples, 2007; Squire, Holland & Jenkins, 2002); 2. Affordable and ubiquitous access: Mobile devices (e.g. the 4.5 billion cellphones worldwide) put web access and ‘high-spec’ functionality in the hands of more users than any other digital technology; 3. Situated, ‘just-in-time’ learning opportunities: There is a social expectation that we can engage and process information whenever and wherever we want, and the development of cloud-based computing supports the way in which mobile devices can decentralized our learning experiences (Johnson, Levine, Smith & Stone, 2010; van’tHooft, 2008). M-learning affords a process of exploring and collaborating within multiple contexts using interactive tools (Sharples, 2007); 4. Connection and convergence: M-learning is often concerned with enabling social interactivity and connectivity. Mobile devices connect us to other people, other devices, other networks, and other technologies (Klopfer, et al., 2002); 5. Individualized and personalized experiences: Mobile devices offer individuality, a “unique scaffolding that can be customized to the individual’s path of investigation” (Peters, 2009, p.117). iPhones, iPads and iTouches offer an array of applications (‘apps’) that can be easily commissioned for local use
 • #9 For over 20 years ISTE has monitored research on the effectiveness of technology and the common trend has pointed in the same direction, technology when implemented into instruction has a strong positive, impact on student achievement. The integrating of technology is becoming more common as individual states create personalized programs such as Missouri’s eMINTS and Texas’s Technology Immersion Pilot. eMINTS is an acronym for enhancing Missouri’s Instructional Networked Teaching StrategiesMultiple studies and research based articles has shown that technology has positively effected reading, math and literacy in our country.
 • #10 ISTE had also identified these key factors for the correct implication of the technology to produce a positive result. These are some great steps we can take as a district:. Effective professional development for teachers in the integration of technology into instruction is necessary to support student learning.2. Teachers’ direct application of technology must be aligned to local and/or state curriculum standards.3. Technology must be incorporated into the daily learning schedule (i.e., not as a supplement or after-school tutorial).4. Programs and applications must provide individualized feedback to students and teachers and must have the ability to tailor lessons to individual student needs.5. Student collaboration in the use of technology is more effective in influencing student achievement than strictly individual use.6. Project-based learning and real-world simulations are more effective in changing student motivation and achievement than drill-and-practice applications.7. Effective technology integration requires leadership, support, and modeling from teachers, administrators, and the community/parents.
 • #11 Technology is all around us and has molded and supported the world that we live in today. If we want our student to continue a path of success we need to supply them with all the tools necessary to not only follow this path but pave their own!
