21. UK TV – REALISM AND NARRATIVE THEMES
• Realism is the quality of representing a person or thing in a way that is
accurate to real life.
• A narrative is a spoken or written account of events, much like a story.
UK TV often does well in presenting realism and narrative themes within
shows, for example, shows such as EastEnders show working class people
going about their day to day lives, something which many of the audience
can relate to. As well as this, the costumes that are worn by the actors
within the show also represent real life and are familiar to the audience as
being ‘every day’ clothing. This is different to shows such as ‘Downton
Abbey’ which portrays a life many are not familiar with. EastEnders will
often keep up with popular culture and incorporate these elements into
their show, for example, when the characters are in the ‘Queen Victoria’
pub, you may often hear music that is currently in the charts, keeping the
show up to date and relevant to the audience.
