Show Me The Money S C A A Symposium 2009 Draft Presentation Jason P...SCAA
The document discusses financing challenges for sustainable coffee producers and potential solutions. It notes that coffee producers face barriers to accessing sufficient financing due to perceived high risks by banks. Existing mechanisms like warehouse receipts and contract-based lending have limitations. It proposes establishing a consumer-driven guarantee fund, where roasters and consumers invest to provide guarantees that help secure lending for small sustainable coffee producers. This would help overcome financing gaps by encouraging banks to lend to these producers.
This document examines the costs and profits at each stage of the coffee supply chain from producer to retailer. It shows that a pound of fair trade organic coffee sells for $1.50 to an importer who then sells it for $1.89 to a roaster after adding costs. The roaster roasts and packages it, selling it for $7.25 per pound to retailers. Retailers brew it into 16 cups sold for $28, making a $17.57 profit per pound after costs. However, operating expenses reduce the retailer's net profit to $1.68 per pound, or 6% of sales.
This document summarizes the challenges facing the Central American coffee sector. It discusses declining coffee prices paid to growers in nominal and real terms over time. It also examines rising production costs for farmers in Central America due to increasing costs of fertilizers, labor, and other inputs. The document concludes that under-investment on farms threatens the long-term sustainability of the coffee industry from economic, social, and environmental standpoints. Key areas for addressing this include improving productivity and focusing on higher value chain approaches to increase on-farm income.
This document discusses coffee production in Indonesia, focusing on the region of Sumatra. It provides details on production amounts and export figures for Indonesia. For Sumatra, it describes the small-holder farming system and processing methods, particularly wet-hulling which is unique to the region. The document then summarizes a study conducted in Aceh province that evaluated different coffee varieties grown there using both full-washed and wet-hulled processing methods. Key findings were that hybrid varieties and a Catimor performed best in cupping, and that wet-hulling enhanced body and reduced acidity compared to full-washed.
peaberry extends Guice to support injection of dynamic services. It provides OSGi integration out of the box and has plug-in support for other registry-based service frameworks.
This talk introduces peaberry and shows how it can be used to seamlessly blend both OSGi services and Eclipse extensions in the same application, as well as help switch between the two approaches.

"Does Foreign Direct Investment Negatively Affect Preservation of Culture in the Global South? Case Studies in Thailand and Cambodia."
Do elements of globalization, such as Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), negatively affect the ability of countries in the Global South to preserve their culture? This research aims to answer this question by employing a cross-sectional comparative case study analysis utilizing methods of difference. Thailand and Cambodia are compared as they are in the same region and have a similar culture. The metric of difference between Thailand and Cambodia is their ability to preserve their culture. This ability is operationalized by their respective attitudes towards FDI; Thailand imposes stringent regulations and limitations on FDI while Cambodia does not hesitate to accept most FDI and imposes fewer limitations. The evidence from this study suggests that FDI from globally influential countries with high gross domestic products (GDPs) (e.g. China, U.S.) challenges the ability of countries with lower GDPs (e.g. Cambodia) to protect their culture. Furthermore, the ability, or lack thereof, of the receiving countries to protect their culture is amplified by the existence and implementation of restrictive FDI policies imposed by their governments.
My study abroad in Bali, Indonesia, inspired this research topic as I noticed how globalization is changing the culture of its people. I learned their language and way of life which helped me understand the beauty and importance of cultural preservation. I believe we could all benefit from learning new perspectives as they could help us ideate solutions to contemporary issues and empathize with others.

OJP data from firms like Vicinity Jobs have emerged as a complement to traditional sources of labour demand data, such as the Job Vacancy and Wages Survey (JVWS). Ibrahim Abuallail, PhD Candidate, University of Ottawa, presented research relating to bias in OJPs and a proposed approach to effectively adjust OJP data to complement existing official data (such as from the JVWS) and improve the measurement of labour demand.
