A barn owl chick was discovered in a stairwell at Simi Valley Hospital, halting construction on part of a new patient care tower. Named Al, the chick was found five days prior and is being cared for since barn owls are protected species. Hospital officials are working with wildlife experts on securing permits to relocate Al to a raptor refuge center once it is old enough, causing only minor construction delays. In the meantime, nesting boxes were built to encourage barn owls to nest elsewhere on the property.

Design, now more than ever, has been thrust into the spotlight and touted as a pillar for some of the most successful businesses in our era. Because of this, startups are being taught not to overlook their brand and to value design thinking rather than overlooking it. What they aren't taught however is how to approach designers to become a part of their team. I'd like to discuss the things to consider when approaching creative talent and recommend ways to do it.

The document discusses the history and process of cloning. It begins by summarizing Dr. Ian Wilmut's successful cloning of Dolly the sheep in 1997, the first animal cloned from an adult cell. It then provides a timeline of cloning experiments dating back to the 1930s involving frogs, mice, and sheep. The technique used to clone Dolly involved fusing the nucleus of an adult mammary cell into an egg cell with its nucleus removed. The cloned embryo was then implanted into a surrogate mother sheep, resulting in the birth of Dolly. The document discusses both the potential benefits and ethical concerns regarding human cloning.
This document discusses the welfare impacts of different housing systems for egg-laying hens. It finds that battery cages severely restrict hen movement and do not allow hens to engage in natural behaviors. Furnished cages provide slightly more space but still do not allow hens to run, jump or fully spread their wings. Cage-free housing, such as aviary systems, provide hens with enough space to turn around comfortably and engage in natural behaviors like nesting and dust-bathing. However, cage-free systems also present some disease and injury risks that can be mitigated through management practices. Overall, the document concludes that cage-free housing has welfare advantages over cage systems for egg-laying hens.
Is Human Reproductive Cloning Morally Permissible?Gwynne Brunet
The subject of human reproductive cloning is a complicated one which contains many issues that need to be understood, and considered; before a course of action can be taken. In regards to cloning, any decision that will be agreed upon, in our distant future, will not be simply black and white, but instead it will be a colorful array of restrictions, rules, laws, supervision, and ethical standards. In this paper, I will evaluate the facts, and determine, through moral reasoning, whether human reproductive cloning is morally permissible.
Tamara Leahy is a PhD student studying ways to protect ram sperm during processing for freezing and sex-sorting. Her research aims to explore adding seminal plasma proteins to sperm to protect them from stress and damage during these processes. Her preliminary results suggest stress from sex-sorting causes oxidative damage to sperm, but adding seminal plasma proteins or antioxidants may help protect sperm fertility. While her studies show some success improving fertility, more work is needed to fully understand and address the variable responses observed related to factors like the season and timing of adding the protective proteins. She invites the reader to join her team to further this important work.
The document discusses different terms related to animal cloning such as genes and alleles. It provides facts about species extinction and the history of zoos. It also describes different types of cloning techniques used by scientists, including some examples of animals that have been cloned. The document discusses genetic disorders and advances in understanding genetics from the Human Genome Project. It concludes with some basic principles of genetics such as dominance.

Ticks are small blood-feeding arthropods that can transmit diseases to humans and animals. They are commonly found in forest and grassy areas near woods or fields. Ticks wait for hosts on vegetation and can transmit diseases once attached, with the most common being Lyme disease. Personal protection measures and tick checks are recommended, as well as modifying habitats to reduce tick populations by removing leaf litter and tall grasses near play areas and excluding deer that can transport ticks. Monitoring tick numbers by dragging areas is important for assessing risk levels.

OWL CHICK EARLY FOR HOSPITAL'S NEW NURSERY
NEST HALTS CONSTRUCTION WORK.(News)
Byline: Eric Leach Staff Writer
SIMI VALLEY - What's fuzzy, as small as a softball and able all by itself to hold up part of a
$35 million hospital project?
A barn owl chick named Al.
Since being discovered in a nest in a second-floor stairwell five days ago, the plump chick has
halted construction on part of the Simi Valley Hospital's Patient Care Tower.
While their species is not considered endangered, common barn owls are protected by federal
officials and can be removed only after proper permits are secured.
``It's a fat little chick and looks like he or she has gained 'a few pounds' since we found it,'' joked
hospital spokesman Jeremy Brewer.
Hospital officials had hoped to remove the bird Monday, but arrangements could not be made in
time, Brewer said. He characterized the construction delay as minor.
With its huge beak, the chick looks a little like a Dr. Seuss character. As an adult, the barn owl
will weigh about 20 to 25 ounces if a female, less if a male, wildlife watchers said. The chick was
nicknamed Al, after an electrician on the project.
Officials with Turner Construction Co. said they hope to take the bird to the Ojai Raptor Refuge,
but it is uncertain when they will be able to do it.
The hospital tower is expected to be completed in 2006 and will house a neonatal intensive care
unit, a neurosurgery unit and a cardiology diagnostic department.
Jason L. Maxwell, project manager for Turner, said nesting boxes were built after the chick was
discovered to encourage its parents and other barn owls to nest there rather than in their
project.
``If I had known there were owls around here, I would have built them sooner,'' Maxwell said.
Kimberly Stroud, director of the Ojai Raptor Center, said barn owls are known for nesting in
out-of-the-way places, including hay trucks and recycling plants.
But the birds are great for rodent control, so farmers in Ventura County frequently set up
barn-owl boxes to attract them, Stroud said.
