MARA GABRILLI: BREAKING BARRIERS FOR THE DISABLED
Quadriplegia was not enough to make her stop moving. More than an inspiring story,
a lesson in overcoming pain and suffering.
Mara Gabrilli, 26, a lifetime ahead, has undergone a change that many would believe
to be the end of a life. But this young woman showed that for her, it was just the
beginning of a new story. Mara was in the car with her boyfriend and a friend, in
Trindade, Rio de Janeiro, when the vehicle lost control on the “death curve” and
plummeted 15m in a ravine, overturning several times. She became quadriplegic and
relied on assistance 24 hours a day.
However, Mara Gabrilli did not give up on living, and live in the best possible way. She
confesses that greater than the fear of being quadriplegic, was that of not being able
to breathe alone. And when she finally got rid of the devices, the fact that she had
only a 1% chance of walking again didn't weigh that much.
Since then, she follows Mara Grabrilli breaking down barriers. This psychologist and
publicist works about 10 hours a day. In 2005, Mayor José Serra was invited to take
over in 2005 the country's first secretariat dedicated exclusively to the blind, deaf and
other disabled people. From then on, Mara began her battle to include 1.5 million
disabled people in society, as well as the 2 million people with reduced mobility, who
live in the capital.

collector in a selective collection cooperative and, despite her heavy routine, she found the
strength to dedicate herself to her studies, using the books and materials she found in the

However, Lizzie used all this negative charge to her advantage and became an example of
strength and optimism. She turned it around, became a motivational speaker and uses all
the visibility she gained to carry out campaigns aimed at combating cyberbullyin.
Nick Vujicic
Another great and extraordinary example of overcoming, to keep in us the inspiration we
need to move forward on our journey. I'm talking about the story of Nicholas James Vujicic,
or, as he is better known worldwide, Nick Vujicic.
Nick is Australian, born in Melbourne, and also due to a rare syndrome, called Tetra-amelia,
he was born without his legs and arms. Certainly, many difficulties and challenges came his
way, something that led to an attempted suicide at the age of eight.
However, this fact also made him start to see life differently and with great faith, he began to
realize that he was able to overcome the challenges that arose. So, at the age of 17, he
founded the NGO Life Without Limbs or “Life Without Members”, which contributes and
helps people with physical disabilities to face the limitations they have.
Nick is currently a speaker and, like Lizzie, he also shows people the importance of
maintaining faith, courage and hope, in order to find the true meaning of life.
Rick Prospera
Certainly, at some point, you have already heard the catchphrase “Get the vision!”. If you
haven't already, you will now know what and, more specifically, who I am talking about. This
is Rick Prospera, or Rick Chester, who, as a water seller on the sands of Copacabana
beach, became a lecturer at Harvard University, in the United States.
Rick has one of those stories that will make you even more motivated today. He has been
everything in this life: bricklayer, general services assistant, janitor, vegetable seller and so
on. One day, going through financial difficulties, he borrowed 10 reais from a friend and with
that money he bought ice and water at the supermarket and went to sell on the beach. The
profit he made in the days that followed, made him start recording videos on Youtube,
teaching people what he had done and helping them to do the same.
