On May 4, 1927, 36 film industry professionals convened to form the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to improve film quality and promote the industry. The Academy currently has around 6,500 members and gives out annual Academy Awards, commonly called Oscars. The document then lists the winners of major Oscar categories like Best Picture, Best Actor/Actress, and technical awards from 1999-2008.
