THE ORTON-GILLINGHAM METHOD TEACHES
STUDENTS HOW TO DECODE WORDS BY BREAKING
THEM INTO SYLLABLES AND THEN BLENDING THE
SOUNDS TOGETHER TO MAKE WORDS.
THIS METHOD ALSO HELPS STUDENTS LEARN HOW
TO SPELL BY LOOKING AT WORD PATTERNS AND
IDENTIFYING LETTERS OR GROUPS OF LETTERS THAT
MAKE UP EACH SOUND IN A WORD.
THE ORTON-GILLINGHAM APPROACH IS BASED ON A
MULTISENSORY, STRUCTURED LANGUAGE
PROGRAM THAT EMPHASIZES AN INDIVIDUALIZED
APPROACH TO TEACHING READING AND WRITING
SKILLS TO CHILDREN WITH DYSLEXIA OR OTHER
LANGUAGE-BASED LEARNING DISABILITIES (LLD).
IT RELIES ON A SEQUENTIAL SET OF CAREFULLY
