The Orion service module is the powerhouse of the Orion spacecraft, supplying it with electricity, propulsion, thermal control, air and water. After launch, the service module will propel Orion beyond the Moon and help it return to Earth before detaching. For the first time, NASA will use a European-built system as a critical element to power an American spacecraft. Provided by ESA and Airbus, the service module extends NASA's international cooperation from the ISS into deep space exploration.
