Editor's Notes

  • #2 Thank you for inviting me here to speak. My name is Theresa Mastrodonato and I am a reference librarian and Coordinator of Library Instruction for 1st Year Students at the Ort Library.I have been at FSU since August 2011 and met many of you in the ORIE 101 library instruction session.Today I want to talk a little bit about ORIE 101 library instruction session to give you a sense of what it entails. If you have questions along the way, please ask. What I want to share with you is:What a typical session is likeTalk about the difference between the ORIE 101 and the ENGL 101 library sessionsTalk about the benefits of bringing your students in for a sessionAnswer any questionsFinally, if anyone ready to schedule a class, I have forms here with me.
  • #3 So what is a typical session like:Introduction of the library home page and the important highlights of the pageStudents get info on the libguide created specifically for themStudents learn how to search the library catalogStudents watch a short video on finding a book in the stacksStudents then leave the classroom and go to the 2nd floor to get a brief introduction to the resources thereStudents are given a scavenger hunt that they complete in groups of about 4No group has the same questions or tasks.Students spend ≈ 25 minutes outside of classThis is about half the class time where they are out in the library learning where things areStudents then return to the classroom where we spend time talking about what they have learned
  • #4 Some people have asked about the difference between IHE (ORIE 101) and ENGL 101This chart details the difference between the 2ORIE 101:Students learn about library as placeStudents find ref desk, media desk, that there are other floorsFind books and study roomsStudents work in groups to complete the scavenger huntStudents are out in the library for about ½ the classENGL 101:Students are usually learning how to find info for a specific assignmentStudents learn how to search the databasesStudents are in the classroom only
  • #5 Why you should bring your ORIE 101 class to the libraryI realize that many of you only have the students for 1 day a week and have a lot to cover with them but since most students will use the library at some point in their academic career, the library session is a great introductionStudents get out of the classroom and into the library. Most scavenger hunts take students to all 4 floors of the libraryI can tailor your class to your individual topicDo you want to see special collections?Do you want me to tailor the class to find information on computer science? We can do that!!Hopefully if they feel comfortable with meeting and working with a librarian, they will be less stressed about using the library or asking for help
  • #6 Any questions I can answer? My contact info is listed here.
  • #7 Finally…..Are you ready to schedule a class?I have some sheets here to fill out or you can e-mail me directly, call me or fill out the form onlineOn the library home page, click on the plus next to User Services. Then click on online forms. Then select the Library Instruction Request form.
