Operation Redwing was a 2005 Navy SEAL mission in Afghanistan aimed at capturing or killing a Taliban leader. A group of 4 SEALs were discovered by goat herders and engaged in a firefight with 200 enemy fighters. One SEAL, Lt. Michael Murphy, was killed trying to call for backup. A rescue helicopter was then shot down, killing all on board. The sole surviving SEAL, Marcus Luttrell, was rescued after local villagers found and protected him for days. The operation resulted in the largest loss of life for U.S. special forces since World War II.
