- Chinese Proverb “ One step at a time is good walking.”
one step at a time creates a tempo
expertise: focusing Stanford athletes on the tempo of their steps as they walk from lecture to lecture in order to calm their minds.
expertise in technical terms: Audience: Stanford undergraduate athletes who often frontload their schedules with morning classes due to afternoon practice. These students also have experience in pacing practices such as yoga, etc. Stressor: While walking between lectures, most students become stressed by unhelpful tasks such as worrying about classes, needlessly texting/ calling peers, or simply just rushing for no reason. Calmer: Divert attention away from everything but the task of focusing on the tempo of one’s steps. Akin to using music to control breath, this uses a naturally occurring rhythm to slow one’s thoughts.
Idea #1 by Greg Elliott SynchStep iPhone app Automagically changes song to match current tempo of walking, thus giving auditory feedback to keep mind focused on steps.
