About the author
Susan Hill (1942) is an English novelist children's writer and
playwright. Her novels are written in descriptive Gothic style especially her
ghost story 'The women in black ' which was published in 1983. It is a
traditional English ghost story which relies on suspense and atmosphere to
create its impact

THE MEETING IN THE GARDEN
* Derry a young boy climbs over the garden wall of Mr. Lamb and and
enters the garden walling cautiously looking around thinking no one is
around.
* He then suddenly startled to hear Mr. Lambs voice. Mr. Lambs told
him there was no worry and everyone were welcome there and nothing
to be afraid of.

DERRY APPEARS TO BE APPREHENSIVE
* Derry was very furious and vehemently stood there trying to tell
him that he wasnt afraid and not a "poor boy"
* He wasn't afraid of seeing Mr. Lamb but afraid of himself because
one side of his face got burnt as acid fell on him.
* Mr. Lamb seeing the situation realised he was very furious,
changed the topic, says, he was gonna make jelly out of the crab apples
which was all around his garden.
* This enrages Derry even more and tells him he changed the subject as
he was also afraid of him by seeing his face and like other people trying
to sympathize him and also afraid to talk about it because he was ugly

MR.LAMBS PHILOSOPHY OF REVEALING HIS
IMPAIRMENT
* During the conversation, Mr. Lamb asks Derry what does he see
across the wall. To which Derry replies that he sees some weed.
* Mr. Lamb explains to him that for some they are just weeds, while
for some there are flowers, fruits, and all such lovely things.
* Then Mr Lamb tells him about his tin leg and how he got his leg
blown off. He adds that kids call him Lamey-lamb and that does not
trouble him at all.
* Derry says that Mr.lamb could cover his tin legs but he cant not with
that face,but according to lamb there are many more attractive things
to do in the world which are more important.

* Mr.lamb has a positive and optimistic attitude towards Life.But he
feels that his face remains the same (burnt).He also says that no on
would kiss him other than his mother which she have to do.

DERRY CALLS Mr.LAMB PECULIAR
* Derry narrates an incident to Mr.Lamb
* Derry heard two women talk about his in the bus stop
* One said " Look at that , that's a terrible thing " Derry was hurt
* Mr. Lamb advises Derry to not to believe everything that he hears,
Derry replies Mr.Lamb is 'Peculiar'
* Derry says he doesn't like being around people , to that Lamb replies
with a story.
* Through this story Mr.Lamb wanted to connvey Derry that one
cannot hide oneself just because of some fear.

THE POSITIVE SIDE OF LIFE
* Derry notices that there were no curtains on the windows of
Mr.Lamb's house .MrLamb replies that he is not fond of curtains
because they shut things out.
* Mr.Lamb says that Derry is not lost . It means that there is still a
sensitive part in his heart but hidden because of the bitterness
* Even Derry's family has pity on him like what he will do with that face.
They felt that the world is difficult for him to live with that face .
Mr.Lamb says that he can live his life easily like other do .
* Mr.Lamb tells that everyone is his friend even Derry, Derry is
confused because Mr.Lamb doesn't even know Derry's name . Lamb
explains that name don't signify anything.

* Being friends doesn't mean that you should know all the details
about a person . Derry chooses to tell him his name . He says its ' Derek
' but he hates being called by that . He wants to be called Derry only

WATCHING , LISTENING , THINKING
* Derry tells Mr lamb that he hates some people and Mr lamp says that
hatred is more dangerous than the acid that burned his face.
* Derry also narrates a incident that he heard someone say that he
would be better off in the hospital with others 'like him'. Mr .Lamb
contradicts that by asking what kind of a world would that be.
* Derry is amazed and asked how he understand all these things .
Mr .Lamb replies 'Watching ,Listening Thinking'.
* Derry tells Mr lamb that his friends would run away at seeing Derry's
face. Mr .Lamb says that he has to come out of his shell and live his life
to the fullest.

DERRY OFFERS HIS HELP
* Derry asks how he is going to get the Apple down since he wears a
tin leg .Mr .Lamb assures him that he has learned to deal with his
handicap over the years.
* Derry says that he could help him but his mother won't allow him and
Mr.Lamb replies that it is not Derry's mother but his own hesitation that
don't let him go.
* Mr.Lamb says that he could do anything if he choose to and the
power of choosing what one wants lies in one's own hands.
* He also says that his burnt face is just an excuse. Derry becomes
angry and mocks is till legs and promises to return to the garden.

DERRY CHOOSES FOR HIMSELF
* The second scene begins in Derry's house . He is fighting with his
mother because he wants to return to Mr.Lamb, and his mother is not
allowing him to go.
* But Derry insists that he wants to go . For the first time in his life
someone has shown him the right way . He wants to talk to Mr.Lamb
about things which matter to him .
* She simply tells him that he is bound to say such awful things
because of his face anymore . Derry strongly replies that he doesn't care
about his face anymore. The transformation has begun

DERRY IS A CHANGED PERSON
* Derry reaches there out of breath . He finds Mr.Lamb laying on the
ground . He has been trying to pick the Apple off the tree when the ladder
has slipped and he along with it has fallen on the ground .
* Derry tries to awaken him but Mr.Lamb is unmoving. He is probably
dead . Derry lost his only friend and he begins to cry . Mr.Lamb was able
to do what he has been trying he has tough Derry how to live.
