If this Giant Must Walk: A Manifesto for a New Nigeria
Old Age Homes are the Ideal Refuge for the Old People of any Society
1. Old Age Homes are the Ideal Refuge for the Old People of any Society
Welcome to the house at large. Today I, Aditya Garg of Class 11-C present before you my
debate on the topic “This house believes that Old Age Homes are the Ideal Refuge for the
Old People of any Society” and I will be speaking against the motion today.
For many centuries, India has had the culture of joint families. The concept of a nuclear
family was introduced in India from the west. Parents invest their love, effort and resources
in their children. They perform it as their duty and provide the child with education, fulfil
their financial demands and take care of their social and emotional wellbeing. They never
send their child to a hostel for the purpose of enjoying their own life.
Even when their children become parents, they support them as grandparents. They always
try to make life easier for their children as well as grandchildren. When parent grow old, they
require help from their children, but are not given the love and affection that they deserve.
The children forget their duties towards their parents and which eventually leads to the
parents being sent to old age homes to spend the rest of their lives. By sending parents to old
age homes, we are setting a wrong precedence which our children would follow
Old age homes are not the place where aged parents want to see themselves in. being away
from their children and grandchildren makes them sad and dejected with life and they lose
interest in things around them. Old age homes may provide food, shelter and medical aid, but
they cannot substitute for the love and care the parents expect from their children.
I now rest my case.
Thank You
Aditya Garg
