History
History of the Oklahoma River:
The Oklahoma River has come to be known as the world class paddle sport
destination in all of America. This was not always the case however, before the
Oklahoma River was the Oklahoma River it was the North Canadian River. The
Oklahoma River was created by widening, straightening, and realigning the river to
prevent the flooding of Downtown Oklahoma City. This project was a success, but the
end result created a dry riverbed. A second initiative took action in December of 1993 to
restore water in the Oklahoma River called MAPS (Metropolitan Area Projects). This
project was created to improve the quality of life in Oklahoma City, the largest city in
Oklahoma that is home to over 600,000 people. The original MAPS project constructed
the Bricktown Canal, Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark, a new library, renovation of the
convention center, construction of the Chesapeake Energy Arena (where the NBA’s OKC
Thunder play), a rehaul of the Civic Center Music Hall, and improvements to the
Oklahoma River. Under MAPS, the Oklahoma River received $50 million which
constructed low­water dams, but it received a boost in 2009 by the passing of MAPS 3.
History of the Boathouse District:
Through the construction of the Oklahoma River, Oklahoma City has been
dubbed “America’s Next Great Rowing City” by Rowing News magazine and America’s
Paddlesport Capital by the American Canoe Association. The Oklahoma River sits right
next to downtown Oklahoma City, in fact hotels and restaurants are within walking
distance to the riverfront. Not only are there hotels and restaurants in close proximity to
the river, it is easily accessible by car as it is located at the crossroads of two major
freeways: the I­35 and I­40. The OKC Boathouse Foundation oversees what is now the
Boathouse District. The OKC Boathouse Foundation believes that the Oklahoma River
has the power to change the lives of not only the citizens of Oklahoma City, but of the
entire nation. They believe they can complete this task through all of the amenities that
the Boathouse District has to offer

The Mission Statement of the OKC Boathouse Foundation
"The Oklahoma City Boathouse Foundation's mission is to develop and
operate facilities and programs to improve the quality of life in Oklahoma City,
pursue the highest goals of sports and fitness, attract diverse involvement in the
boathouses and related events that generate a positive public image and economic
opportunity, and promote the use of the Oklahoma River as a world­class urban
aquatic venue."
Finances
The Oklahoma City Boathouse Foundation is a nonprofit so they are required to make
their tax records accessible to the public and can be seen in the supplemental 990 form that is
apart of this plan. A projected budget for finances is also included in the attachments.

6. Staffing: ​There are 50 full time employees who work for the OKC Boathouse
Foundation and they have part time positions that vary during the year because the
Adventure Park is closed for a small portion of the year. During the off season they have
130 employees and during the season they oversee 275 employees. There are also 40 full
time management positions.
Estimated Payroll:
1. In­Season and Full Time: ​$1,287,000 (Part­time payroll In­Season) +
$64,350 (Tax and Overhead Expenses In­Season) + $1,320,000 (Full­time
Management) + $132,000 (Tax and Overhead expenses) = ​$2,803,350

Funding
Funding of Improvements to the Oklahoma River
The flattening of the Oklahoma River, was a crucial point in the creation of what
is now known as the Boathouse District. The river needed low­level dams in order to
create a larger riverbed that could be utilized for water sports. Through MAPS they were
created and it was through a tax initiative put in place by the mayor in 1993, Ron Norick
and civic leader Ray Ackerman. The one­cent sales tax initiative collected over $309
million and accrued $54 million in interest. The total came out to $363 million and the
improvements for the Oklahoma River took around 14% of the total which came out to
$50 million. A second one­cent sales tax initiative was run in 2009 that will provide $777
million for improvements within the city, and $60 million is marked specifically for the
Oklahoma River.
Funding of the OKC Boathouse District
“Power 10” Partners ​­ The “Power 10” Partners are giving the largest support to the
projects along the Oklahoma River. These companies: fund for nationally and
internationally recognized events, seed money for master plan development, and offering
significant investment to new boathouses and the finish line tower.
1. Devon Energy ​­ Devon Energy is one of the largest U.S. based independent
natural gas and oil producers, which is headquartered in Oklahoma City, OK.

7. Devon Energy contributed the Devon Boathouse to the Boathouse District.
2. OGE ​­ Oklahoma Gas and Electric serves 750,000 customers in Oklahoma and
western Arkansas. OGE sponsors the OGE NightSprints, where a 500 meter race
takes place under colorful lights.
3. Chickasaw Nation ​­ The Chickasaw Nation is a federally recognized Native
American nation, located in Oklahoma.
4. American Energy Partners ​­ American Energy Partners is an oil and natural gas
distributor to Oklahoma and it has affiliates across the country. American Energy
Partners most famously sponsor the fireworks for the Stars and Stripes River
Festival.

The Oklahoma City Boathouse Foundation simply oversees the Boathouse
District. The foundation raises money that goes toward the projects of the
Boathouse District. The four sponsors listed above, have had a great impact on the
Boathouse District and have donated the most to the facilities. The OKC
Boathouse Foundation doesn’t solely accept money from large corporations. They

Social Media:
1. Facebook: ​Riversport OKC is a very active page that the Oklahoma Boathouse
District uses to communicate with their members and guests. It offers pictures of
people who use their facilities and events that they put on. They have
approximately 6,000 people who like their Facebook page. The social media team
posts daily if not twice daily to keep these followers up to date. They also have a
button located on their website that allows you to easily find their Facebook page.
2. Twitter: ​On Twitter, the Boathouse District is consistent with their account name
using Riversport OKC here as well. On Twitter they interact with those who
mention and often retweet pictures of athletes using their facilities. The Boathouse
District has a larger following on Twitter with over 11,000 followers.
3. Flickr: ​Using the name Oklahoma River Events on Flickr they post pictures onto
a Photostream so people who are apart of events can go and see themselves or
their teams. Flickr isn’t a very popular social media, so they only have 18
followers. They update it frequently with the latest post being on November 8,
2015.
4. Youtube: ​The Boathouse District page on Youtube is a place primarily dedicated
for showing all that the Boathouse District has to offer. They have 380
subscribers.
Social Media is just one way that the Boathouse District reaches out to the people of
OKC. They also use digital advertising, print advertising, email marketing, community
relations, public relations, trade shows and other tools to promote the small private
nonprofit business.

Riversport Adventures
The Riversport Adventure Park is a theme park just minutes from downtown
Oklahoma City where park goers can enjoy being in, on, or around the Oklahoma River,
and experience fun, exhilarating attractions that are centered around improving the health
of the individuals that visit. The Riversport Adventure Park is unparalleled to any park
out there. What makes the park so unique is its ability to please all types of people. For
example, a thrill seeking individual will find his niche at the Rumble Drop and someone
who is a bit more easy going will find enjoyment kayaking or stand­up paddleboarding.

The Riversport Adventure Park is unlike these other facilities because it offers
more than just an aerial adventure park. The pass includes rentals for water sports and
bike rentals, giving a diversified experience for those who want to try everything.

12. SandRidge Sky Trail and Slide: ​Sponsored by SandRidge Energy, the
SandRidge Sky Trail and Slide is the tallest aerial adventure park in the world. It
includes 6 levels on an 80 foot structure that become more difficult the higher you
climb up. Each person is strapped in using a safety harness that allows people to
have no limits while on the course, giving adrenaline junkies a rush if they miss a
platform. Once you reach the top, you can then travel down America’s tallest
slide standing at 72 feet high. It is a rush equal to the aerial rope course.
Rumble Drop: ​The Rumble Drop is attached to the SandRidge Sky Trail and
Slide. What exactly is the Rumble Drop? It is a free fall experience that is made
possible by PowerFan ® technology.It is similar to skydiving and bungee
jumping, but without the bounce. You get the sensation of free falling from 80
feet in the air. This attraction was created with the help of the Oklahoma City
Thunder and named after their mascot “Rumble”.
SandRidge Sky Zip:​ This zip line starts from the top of the SandRidge Sky Trail
and flies you 700­feet across the width of the Oklahoma River. When you go
across that is just half the fun, you ride a second zip line to cross back over the
river. You will be able to see the 360 degree views that surround the Boathouse
District.

SandRidge Youth Pavilion: ​The SandRidge Youth Pavilion brings a new
dynamic to the Boathouse District by offering a variety of virtual sports machines.
You will be able to work on your golf swing on a simulator and work your way
down the slopes while skiing at the same location. The simulators don’t just
include golf and skiing, they accommodate for golf, basketball, soccer, football,
and baseball. There is also a covered pavilion that will host any event that you
might have.
Youth Zone:
Sky Tykes:​ Sky Tykes is a scaled­down adventure course for younger
kids who do not reach the 48” minimum for the SandRidge Sky Trail and
Slide. They get to strap into a harness just like the adults, but the parents
get to walk alongside the kids because it is only a few feet off of the
ground.

14. Cloud Bounce: ​The Cloud Bounce is a large 48­foot inflatable that both
parents and kids can enjoy. It is a high flying and relaxing attraction that
allows for the dream of walking and jumping on clouds to become a
reality.
Kids Zip: ​Miniature zip line intended for younger children.
Extreme Air Jumper:​ The Extreme Air Jumper straps you in a harness
that is attached to two bungee cords while you are jumping on a
trampoline that allows you to do all sorts of flips and tricks 20 feet in the
air.
Free Playground: ​The Boathouse District also offers a free playground
that encourages kids to be active. The free playground also includes the
NEOS 360 Interactive Play Station.

Kayak and Stand­up Paddleboarding: ​Kayaking and stand­up paddleboarding
is an easy way to get out on the water. The adventure pass allows you to rent
either a kayak or paddleboard and explore the Oklahoma River by getting into the
thick of it. If you are 8+ you can paddle solo, but those who are 5+ can ride
tandem with an adult.
Dragon Boating:
Dragon boat racing is one of the fastest growing watersports in the world.
Riversport Adventures has three different ways for you to experience this fast
growing sport.
1. Private Dragon Boat Excursion
2. Dragon Boat League
3. “Challenge the Dragon” Team Building Experience
Private Dragon Boat Excursion: ​A private excursion will teach you all
of the ins and outs of Dragon boat racing. Included in the rental of a
dragon boat is a steerer who will also offer instruction on land as well as
on the water. There are ten person and twenty person dragon boats
available to rent.
Dragon Boat League: ​The Boathouse District has its own racing league
when it comes to Dragon boat racing. By joining the league, you get a 90
minute practice session for one day a week for ten weeks. Each team has
11­15 members. There are two seasons for the league: one in April and
one in July. League members have access to all of the fitness facilities of
the Chesapeake boathouse and Devon boathouse. There are also two
leagues:
1. Regular
2. Wise Dragon League ­ 60 and older racing league
“Challenge the Dragon”: ​“Challenge the Dragon” is a specifically
targeted team building exercise. The intention behind “Challenge the
Dragon” is to help create an environment indicative to team growth. They
invite groups to help build camaraderie within the team so they can work
better in the office, church, etc…

Cycling and Momentum Pump Track: ​A Riversport Pass will give you access
to 13+ miles of track around the park and all around the Oklahoma River. The
Pump Track, sponsored by Subaru is designed with bumps and humps so that a
rider will use gravity and shift their body weight to speed up and pump through
the course.
Riversport Membership
The Riversport membership gives you access to all of the amenities that the
Boathouse District has to offer, including access to Riversport Adventures and the
boathouses along the shores of the Oklahoma River. The main benefit to a Riversport
membership is that you get the pass to Riversport Adventures, but access to the beautiful
workout facilities.
Chesapeake Boathouse: ​The Chesapeake Boathouse was the first structure to
take form on the Oklahoma River. It was finished in 2006 and serves as the
community boathouse on the river. The Chesapeake Boathouse was designed by
the Oklahoma City architect, Rand Elliott, and was directly funded by

17. Chesapeake Energy Corporation. The design is intended to look like a rowing
shell. The $3.5 million facility includes:
● Deck, lobby, and event room for receptions and meetings
● Boat bays to store up to 124 rowing shells
● A panoramic 24­foot wall of glass overlooking the deck, river, and
reflecting pool
● Event room with a 62­foot window revealing the boat bays
● Fully equipped fitness/training room overlooking the river.
Features: Rentals of recreational kayaks, stand up paddle boards, bikes, and
access to the fitness center, strength and conditioning, free weights, locker room
facilities, indoor rowing class, and additional fitness classes.
Devon Boathouse: ​The $10 million facility is the home for Oklahoma City
University rowing and canoeing/kayaking. It is also the headquarters for the OKC
National High Performance Center. The OKC National High Performance Center
offers training for olympic hopefuls in rowing sports. Rand Elliott also created
this facility with Oklahoma City’s skyline as the backdrop. It looks similar to a
boat’s nose cutting through waves. The Devon Boathouse includes:
● Training facilities
○ Dynamic propulsion training tank
○ High altitude training chamber
○ Endless pool
○ Extensive strength and conditioning facilities
○ High performance training center
○ Concept 2 self­propulsion lab
○ Athlete amenities
● Ann Lacy Event Center: Highly versatile event center that can
accommodate a small or large number of people.

18. ● Admiral’s Club: Donors who contribute to the Boathouse District will
leave a legacy that impacts the lives of the people in OKC.
Lake Overholser Boathouse: ​The Lake Overholser Boathouse offers kayak and
SUP rentals. It is also an extension of the Riversport Adventure park and features:
● “Stunt jump” free fall
● Extreme swing
● Climbing wall
● Double zip line across the water
CHK/Central Boathouse: ​The CHK/Central Boathouse is the home of the
University of Central Oklahoma’s women’s rowing team. It also has a live music
venue and an art gallery. Mike Knopp, executive director of the Oklahoma City
Boathouse Foundation says, “The vision behind the Boathouse District
development always involved creating innovative facilities and programs that
complement one another, working together to create a dynamic, world class
environment unique to Oklahoma City. The CHK/Central Boathouse perfectly
advances this vision by introducing the arts to the Boathouse District and helping
solidify the Oklahoma River as a destination for the entire community.”

OU Boathouse: ​There are plans in the works to create a home for the OU
Women’s NCAA Division 1 program. So far, the project has raised $2 million in
funding as well as a $12.5 million donation by Aubrey and Kathleen McClendon.
Chesapeake Finish Line Tower: ​The Chesapeake Finish Line Tower was also
designed by the Oklahoma native, Rand Elliott, and it represents another stride
forward making the Boathouse District making it an elite destination for rowing.
The 60 foot tower can be seen from I­35 and it includes 4 levels:
● Level 1: Boathouse District welcome center
● Level 2: Finish line jury/timing seats
● Level 3: Commentary/media/race control
● Level 4: VIP viewing gallery and observation deck
The tower has the newest technology in race timing. The Chesapeake Finish Line
Tower isn’t solely for racing, it also includes a fire pit and a movie screen that
make it a great meeting place for the community.

20. Events
The Boathouse District sits in a beautiful location that will provide a beautiful
venue for any type of event such as a wedding, business meeting, party, or retreat. The
Boathouse District sits right on the shores of the Oklahoma River, but is also minutes
away from downtown OKC. Whether it is small and intimate event or a large event, the
Boathouse can accommodate accordingly to satisfy any needs. In 2015, they had 188
private events on their books. Pricing varies through venue not necessarily event type,
and the costs range from $200­$3,000.
Weddings: ​The Boathouse District offers many buildings with open spaces for
weddings. The CHK/Central Boathouse has art and beautiful architecture that
make for a great wedding venue. The Devon Boathouse has two levels that can
hold a large number of wedding guests. Wedding costs range from $1,000­$3,000
just to book the space with more costs on top.
B­Fit Brides: ​Brides can look and feel great through an eight­week
personalized fitness program. A personal trainer will work with the bride
to meet their goals and then the brides will have access to the world­class
fitness facilities and group exercise classes.

Brunches and Showers: ​The Boathouse District can also host brunches
and showers. All of the facilities offer catering and serving bars. There are
also audio/visual systems in place so that you can personalize the event
through music and visuals.

Event Centers:
1. CHK/Central Boathouse:​ The newest building in the Boathouse
District. Architecture includes floor­to­ceiling windows that offer
an exceptional view of the Oklahoma River. The CHK/Central
Boathouse also includes: a built in stage, complete sound system,
projection capabilities, green room/bridal room (with access to
private bathroom), state of the art audio/visual technology, an art
gallery, and a large catering prep room. The CHK/Central
Boathouse can serve 130 people in a seated function or 180 people
for a standing room function.
2. Devon Boathouse:​ The Devon Boathouse offers a two­level event
space. The bottom level will accommodate 200 people at a seated
function and 350 people for a standing function. The Ann Lacy
Event Center located upstairs offers amazing views of the river and
has an outdoor balcony. The Ann Lacy Event Center will seat 100
guests and 200 standing guests. The Devon Boathouse includes a
large catering kitchen, complete sound system that extends
outdoors, projection capabilities, and digital displays for videos,

3. Chesapeake Finish Line Tower: ​The Chesapeake Finish Line
Tower is an ideal location for business meetings, planning retreats,
bridal and social events for up to 50 people. State­of­the­art digital
displays, audio, and wi­fi are available at no extra charge. There
are three diverse locations within the Chesapeake Finish Line
Tower:
a. Fourth Floor: Panoramic view of the OKC skyline and a
balcony overlooking the Oklahoma River.
b. Conference Room Meetings: On the third floor, smaller
meetings of 4­10 can work in a private space that includes:

digital displays for presentations and discussions.
c. Finish Line Pavilion: This space is perfect for a small
cocktail party or informal gatherings. It is located right by
the finish line and sits right next to a fire place.
Corporate Events: ​The Boathouse District offers an escape from the normal
everyday life by its abilities to host business meetings and seminars, employee
picnics and parties, and team building exercises. The corporate events offered will
make finding a fit with any budget restraints easy as prices vary from size of the
event and location of the event.
Business Meetings and Seminars: ​The Boathouse District can serve a
group smaller than 5 or a group of 500. It has space and a qualified staff
that will fit the needs of any company. Tables and chairs are offered at no
extra cost. If you want to add a wrinkle to your business meeting, check
out the team building section.
Employee Picnics and Parties: ​The most popular attraction is the
Riversport Adventure park. The Boathouse District offers group rates that
will accommodate a variety of group sizes. You can also rent a private
event center if you are planning for a holiday or special event.
Team Building: ​Through a variety of team building exercises, the
Boathouse District is looking to help teams collaborate, build trust, and
energize as a group. They offer exercises on land and in the water that will
suit team preferences. There are four major team building exercises:
1. Adventure Challenge:​ is designed to challenge participants both
mentally and physically. The Adventure Challenge is “a land
experience comprised of a series of team exercises that emphasize
strategic thinking, process, communication, trust, and most
importantly, fun!” Adventure Challenge is available year round
and has a minimum of 10 people.
2. Challenge the Dragon:​ Challenge the Dragon introduces the team
to one of the fastest growing sports, dragon boat racing. Dragon
boats hold either 10­20 people depending on their size and is a
highly intense rowing workout. During the session, participants
will work together toward a common goal, and relate their success
and struggles to the workplace.

23. 3. Row the River:​ Is exactly what it sounds like. An instructor will
work with the team to help them understand the team dynamic that
is involved with rowing. There is an indoor and an outdoor team
building exercise. The indoor is open year round, and the outdoor
is open March through October.
4. Sky’s The Limit:​ Will take your team through the SandRidge Sky
Trail and push you to complete tasks and go through obstacles as a
team. Sky’s The Limit is available June through August.
Adventure Birthdays: ​A birthday at the Boathouse District is fun for all. With all
that the Boathouse District has to offer, no one will be “bored”. The Boathouse
District has packages in place so that it makes planning a birthday easy. If a
personalized birthday is requested however, the Boathouse District is more than
happy to oblige in order to make the birthday boy or girl happy.
Adventure Birthdays ­ Boathouse District
1. Youth Package:​ Party for 8, 1.5 hours reserved in the birthday
tent, and passes are valid all day long. This pass allows access into
the Youth Zone (Sky Tykes course, Kids Zip, Cloud Bounce, and
Extreme Air Jumper). The birthday child receives a free shirt and a
big squirt water toy. Youth passes can be purchased for up to 12
additional party guests.
2. Adventures Package:​ Party for 8, 1.5 hours reserved in the
birthday tent, and passes are valid all day long. Party guests will
enjoy all of the benefits of an Adventure Day Pass (SandRidge Sky
Trail and Slide, Rumble Drop, bungee trampolines, Subaru
Momentum Pump Track, kayaking, stand­up paddle boards,
longboards, and more). The birthday child receives a free shirt and

Adventure Birthdays ­ Lake Overholser
1. Adventures Package:​ Party for 8 and 1.5 hours of outdoor party
time. Enjoy all the benefits of the Lake Overholser day pass (zip
line, giant swing, rock wall, Stunt Jump, kayaking, stand­up paddle
boards, and more). The birthday child will receive a free shirt.
Indoor space is available for an extra charge.
Racing: ​The OKC Boathouse District is capable of hosting a small local race or a
nationally recognized regatta. The water of the Oklahoma River makes it a
premiere destination for the best rowing colleges across the country as well as for
the olympic athletes who are preparing to row for the USA in the olympics. The
largest race that the Boathouse District currently has is the OCU Head of the
Oklahoma. This race attracts teams from across the country from Harvard to
Oregon and to the closer universities of Oklahoma. What makes the Boathouse
District unique is that they are innovators of the sport of rowing (Mike Knopp,
Executive Director). They continue to break down barriers set in place by years
and years of history of rowing. The Boathouse District was the first to have a
night race and will introduce a whitewater rafting race in 2016.

25. Riversport Rapids
Up next for the Boathouse District is the construction of the $42.5 million
whitewater rafting experience. This is geared for both family fun and elite training. It will
offer Class II­IV rapids. The 11­acre Riversport Rapids will offer a low flowing channel
and a high octane Class IV rapids at the same time. Riversport Rapids should be ready in
2016.

● Riversport Rapids will be powered by a total of six pumps that weigh over
12,000 pounds each.
● Each pump circulates 82,000 gallons per minute ­ a total of 492,000
gallons per minute. With these pumps, it would take 80 seconds to fill an
Olympic size swimming pool.
● The freestyle channel will be the highest volume pumped whitewater
channel in the world.
Average Trip Length
● The trip down the recreational channel will be 15­20 minutes including the
conveyor ride to the top of the run.
● The competition channel will be a bit faster at 10­15 minutes.
Capacity
● Roughly 2,000 people will be able to raft in a single day making OKC one
of the biggest rafting facilities in the world.
● Riversport Rapids will provide rafting and kayaking for all levels of users,
from novice to Olympic Champion.
Conveyor
● The Conveyor that pulls your raft to the top of the run is approximately
170’ long with a 21’ elevation change.
● It is capable of moving nine fully­loaded rafts or 13,500 pounds at one
time.
