Editor's Notes

  • #2 [Note: This picture was taken in Haiti during the hurricane in 2008, not the earthquake]
  • #5 UN is becoming increasingly field-based. UN is not just the Secretariat but a whole family of organizations with different mandates. Each UN organization is different, has a different way of applying and a different website.
  • #7 UN family of organizations deals with a wide range of issues and offers many opportunities in a broad range of fields.
  • #8 UN family of organizations deals with a wide range of issues and offers many opportunities in a broad range of fields.
  • #10 UN Secretariat main duty stations and tribunals
  • #11 Peacekeeping and political missions. Explain difference between peacekeeping and political mission. Peacekeeping has evolved since 1948 and now requires many different civilian skills to help rebuild societies and institutions in post-conflict nations.
  • #13 ADMINISTRATORS: Human Resources, Finance, Budget, Facilities Management, Administration (general) CONFERENCE AND LANGUAGE STAFF: Interpreter, Translator, etc. SECURITY: Security Operations, E mergency Response, Crisis Management, Physical Security, Close Protection, Fire Safety, Hazardous Materials, Aviation Safety, Investigations, Canine Unit, Compliance, Security Adviser, Security Coordination Officer, Security Officer, Personal Protection Officer, Security Information Analyst, Security Operations Officer, Training Officer
  • #15 The UNV programme UNV directly mobilizes up to 8,000 volunteers every year. Eight out of ten UNV volunteers come from developing countries themselves. A third of all UNV volunteers work within their own countries. Another 9,000 people volunteer on the Internet through the UNV Online Volunteering service. Based in Bonn, Germany, the UNV programme is represented worldwide through the offices of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and reports to the Executive Board of UNDP/UNFPA.

  • #24 Temporary jobs Are you the type of person who is still making decisions about your career, who is not quite ready yet to take the plunge, make a long-term professional commitment or become attached to a job or calling? Perhaps you like the idea of change, career breaks and moving around. Or alternatively, you may just be interested in getting your toe through the door at the United Nations to see what we do and whether you would be interested. If you are this person then a temporary position at the United Nations might be just what you need. Temporary appointments are used to fill positions a period of less than one year to meet seasonal or peak workloads and specific short-term requirements. Temporary appointments may, however, be extended beyond one year only when there are surge requirements, operational needs related to field operations and where circumstances have allowed for special projects with finite mandates. Temporary appointments, which include the initial appointment and any subsequent extensions, may not exceed a total period of no more than 24 months at any given time. Staff members holding a temporary appointment are considered external candidates when applying for job openings.
  • #31 This is the new website where one applies directly to UN Secretariat jobs, whether in Geneva, New York or elsewhere. You will find a lot of additional information on the new website. Each UN organization has its own website. Be careful of fraudulent UN job openings and offers.
  • #33 You may indicate additional websites or e-mail addresses, or names of persons to contact.
