                             Honoring Roger Young
Roger Young has been a member of the Packaging community for over 32 years. Roger has been
employed by GSA for the past 18 years as a Program Analyst in the Center for Distribution Operations.
He also served as a member of the Air Force Reserves for over 28 years, and retired as Chief Master
Sergeant, with military honors, in 2000.

Roger has been an active member of ASTM International Committee D10 on Packaging for many of
those years. He is also an active member of the National Institute of Packaging, Handling and Logistic
Engineers (NIPHLE). Roger is always willing to pass on his knowledge and experience to newcomers
(and very often to “not-so-newcomers”) to the Packaging field. In addition to one-on-one discussions, he
has frequently lectured at the School of Military Packaging Technology’s (SMPT) Advance Packaging
  Course.

During his many years of dedicated service to ASTM International, Roger served as Chair,
Subcommittee D10.12, where he was instrumental in the development of 8 new voluntary standards for
wood containers. He currently serves as Chair, Division 1, where he continues to be actively involved in
the development of voluntary packaging standards.

Roger has received many accolades during his career, including:

1991 – SMPT Military Packaging Professional
1997 – Federal Supply Service’s Technical and Engineering Professional Award
2002 – ASTM International Committee D10 on Packaging Award of Appreciation
     2004 – NIPHLE’s John C. Wilford Memorial Award

More recently, Roger was honored at the March
2009 NIPHLE Conference, where he was inducted
into the Military Packaging Hall of Fame by
  Richard Owen (right), NIPHLE’s Executive
President. Roger is the first GSA employee to be
  so recognized.

This much-deserved honor, which resulted from
  recommendations by fellow packaging professionals,
reflects on his many accomplishments regarding
packaging and standards issues which impact both
  GSA and DoD supply chains.

We congratulate Roger Young on this well-deserved honor, and thank him for his many years of
dedication to the field of packaging, and, especially, to ASTM International Committee D10 on
  Packaging.

Roger, the officers and members of Committee D10 salute you on your
  outstanding achievements!

In April 2008, we introduced you to Frank James Shanahan, the first son of our Staff
Manager, Kevin Shanahan, and his wife, Alanna. In case you haven’t heard, Frankie is now
a big brother. Help us welcome the newest member of the Shanahan family.

Kevin and Alanna welcomed a second son, Wren William on May 8, 2009, at 12:36 AM.

Everyone is doing well, including big brother Frankie, who, by the time you read this, will
 be 2 years old.

Meet Wren William Shanahan, who weighed 7 lbs and was
                                         20-1/4 inches long at birth.
And, don’t you just love the shirt big brother Frankie is wearing?

Congratulations and best wishes, Kevin and Alanna, from the officers and membership of
 Committee D10 on Packaging.

                      D10 in Atlanta – October 2009
In October 2009, we’ll return to Atlanta, GA. If you attended the last meeting in
Atlanta in October 2006, you are already familiar with what the city has to offer. If this
is your first visit, we hope you’ll have some free time to explore the city.

Atlanta is home to the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site, CNN, the world
headquarters of Coca Cola, the Georgia Aquarium (the world’s largest!), Underground
Atlanta, Olympic Centennial Park, and many other cultural and fun attractions too
numerous to mention. Here is a little information about several of Atlanta’s “gems”:

The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site and Preservation District was
established in October 1980 to “protect and interpret for the benefit, inspiration, and
education of present and future generations the places where Martin Luther King Jr was
born, lived, worked and worshipped, and where he is buried. The Site is administered by
the National Park Service. In addition to his birth home, Ebenezer Baptist Church, and his
final resting place, the Site includes the King Center. The King Center is a living memorial
which is dedicated to the advancement of Dr. King’s legacy – nonviolent movement for
   justice, equality and peace.

The Georgia Aquarium has 5 galleries with over 120,000 animals, including whale
sharks, beluga whales, otters, penguins, etc., in more than 8 million gallons of water.

The World of Coca Cola has the largest permanent collection of Coke memorabilia, and
is a fun place to visit, especially if you like unlimited tasting of Coke products from around
the world. This place celebrates the history through many exhibits, videos, and even a
1930s Barnes Soda Fountain. Several times a day, an old-fashioned soda jerk
demonstrates how a Coca Cola drink was prepared in the early days.

Underground Atlanta contains a mixture of shopping, dining and history.

There are many shopping, sightseeing and dining opportunities available to suit every
taste. We recommend that you check with the hotel concierge for recommendations.

No matter what you do, enjoy your time in Atlanta. And, remember, if you take
photographs, or discover a fantastic restaurant, or visit a spectacular museum or historic
site, send us a report via email. We’ll include all submissions in the next issue of the
   Newsletter.

       Send all emails to Loretta.Connors@dla.mil.

  • 4. COMMITTEE D10 ON PACKAGING NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2009 Honoring Roger Young Roger Young has been a member of the Packaging community for over 32 years. Roger has been employed by GSA for the past 18 years as a Program Analyst in the Center for Distribution Operations. He also served as a member of the Air Force Reserves for over 28 years, and retired as Chief Master Sergeant, with military honors, in 2000. Roger has been an active member of ASTM International Committee D10 on Packaging for many of those years. He is also an active member of the National Institute of Packaging, Handling and Logistic Engineers (NIPHLE). Roger is always willing to pass on his knowledge and experience to newcomers (and very often to “not-so-newcomers”) to the Packaging field. In addition to one-on-one discussions, he has frequently lectured at the School of Military Packaging Technology’s (SMPT) Advance Packaging Course. During his many years of dedicated service to ASTM International, Roger served as Chair, Subcommittee D10.12, where he was instrumental in the development of 8 new voluntary standards for wood containers. He currently serves as Chair, Division 1, where he continues to be actively involved in the development of voluntary packaging standards. Roger has received many accolades during his career, including: 1991 – SMPT Military Packaging Professional 1997 – Federal Supply Service’s Technical and Engineering Professional Award 2002 – ASTM International Committee D10 on Packaging Award of Appreciation 2004 – NIPHLE’s John C. Wilford Memorial Award More recently, Roger was honored at the March 2009 NIPHLE Conference, where he was inducted into the Military Packaging Hall of Fame by Richard Owen (right), NIPHLE’s Executive President. Roger is the first GSA employee to be so recognized. This much-deserved honor, which resulted from recommendations by fellow packaging professionals, reflects on his many accomplishments regarding packaging and standards issues which impact both GSA and DoD supply chains. We congratulate Roger Young on this well-deserved honor, and thank him for his many years of dedication to the field of packaging, and, especially, to ASTM International Committee D10 on Packaging. Roger, the officers and members of Committee D10 salute you on your outstanding achievements! Page 4 of 8 Pages

  • 7. COMMITTEE D10 ON PACKAGING NEWSLETTER OCTOBER 2009 D10 in Atlanta – October 2009 In October 2009, we’ll return to Atlanta, GA. If you attended the last meeting in Atlanta in October 2006, you are already familiar with what the city has to offer. If this is your first visit, we hope you’ll have some free time to explore the city. Atlanta is home to the Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site, CNN, the world headquarters of Coca Cola, the Georgia Aquarium (the world’s largest!), Underground Atlanta, Olympic Centennial Park, and many other cultural and fun attractions too numerous to mention. Here is a little information about several of Atlanta’s “gems”: The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Site and Preservation District was established in October 1980 to “protect and interpret for the benefit, inspiration, and education of present and future generations the places where Martin Luther King Jr was born, lived, worked and worshipped, and where he is buried. The Site is administered by the National Park Service. In addition to his birth home, Ebenezer Baptist Church, and his final resting place, the Site includes the King Center. The King Center is a living memorial which is dedicated to the advancement of Dr. King’s legacy – nonviolent movement for justice, equality and peace. The Georgia Aquarium has 5 galleries with over 120,000 animals, including whale sharks, beluga whales, otters, penguins, etc., in more than 8 million gallons of water. The World of Coca Cola has the largest permanent collection of Coke memorabilia, and is a fun place to visit, especially if you like unlimited tasting of Coke products from around the world. This place celebrates the history through many exhibits, videos, and even a 1930s Barnes Soda Fountain. Several times a day, an old-fashioned soda jerk demonstrates how a Coca Cola drink was prepared in the early days. Underground Atlanta contains a mixture of shopping, dining and history. There are many shopping, sightseeing and dining opportunities available to suit every taste. We recommend that you check with the hotel concierge for recommendations. No matter what you do, enjoy your time in Atlanta. And, remember, if you take photographs, or discover a fantastic restaurant, or visit a spectacular museum or historic site, send us a report via email. We’ll include all submissions in the next issue of the Newsletter. Send all emails to Loretta.Connors@dla.mil. Page 7 of 8 Pages
