Assignment 1: Write a 500 written analysis of representation of age and social
class. You must make reference to the micro areas of mise en scene and
camera, using appropriate terminology.
The TV sitcom ‘People Just Do Nothing’ opens with an introduction to the main
cast of the show. It shows them as stereotypical Londoners, commonly identified
as ‘chavs’. The show sets out to follow the lives of these people in the poverty
stricken areas of both social and financial lower class London.
The opening episode ‘Angel’s Christening’ shows the character’s opinions and
beliefs regarding religion and traditional Christian values. This episode follows
the story of the only child in the show being taken to be christened at a Church.
Throughout, we are given introductions to each character’s social class,
personality and financial situation. For example, the body language portrayed
by one character: ‘Steves’ shows a bad posture and questionable fashion choices
compared to the other characters in the show. His general personality trait can
be inferred to be submissive, as he is seen on a bad comedown from his
addiction to illegal drugs. This can be seen as a way to portray his character, as
has submitted to the temptation of drugs and does not hold the ability to go
without them for very long. Another example of Steves’ character is that as
Grindah and his family arrive at the church for the ceremony, Steves is already
there and had slept there in order to ensure that he was not late for the
christening.
The costume design of the show follows the simple basis of common
stereotypical ‘chav’ clothing. For example, matching track suits, trousers tucked
into socks and gelled hair being used for special occasions. Grindah, the main
character, can be seen wearing a chain on the christening and this adds to the
assumption that the culture they live in regards, what could be considered tacky
to the rest of us, bling to be smart. The only makeup seen is worn by Michelle,
and would very well be considered cheap to the rest of society. Another possible
example of makeup could be Grindah’s gelled hair, as it is the social norm for
him to look smarter with the gel in his hair.
INDUCTION ASSESSMENT2015
The colour design of the show is very specific. Almost all of the camera shots
lack vivid colour, no bright, glaring reds, yellows or blues. The entire first
episode is a mix of grey and blue. This simple colour scheme could be a way to
imply that the characters in the show live very simple black and white lives,
believing what they believe with very little opposition to tradition. The colouring
of the interiors and clothing follow the same bland design, for example the
couches are a soft cream colour and their clothing is a mix of grey and black.
The lighting in the show is generally low-key with no exaggerated rim lighting or
back lighting to emphasise a character, with the only external lighting being
some dim white target lighting to reveal a character’s face. The yellow – brown
tinted light bulbs also show the financial situation of the characters, as the lights
would not be the same used in a respected business establishment.
The setting follows the same stereotypes as the rest of the show, being set in
high rise apartment blocks and dimly lit ‘radio stations’. Lower class Londers are
known for owning pirate radio stations and illegally broadcasting their local
music, for example rapping. Grindah and Beats both share the mic on this radio
station and support each other in the presumably freestyle raps that they
produce.
Body language for each character is distinct and revealing. For example, Steves
slouched posture presents he audience with his laid back nature §and
submissiveness. Whereas Grindah walks with a good posture, showing his
confidence and possibly arrogance regarding the world’s opinion of him.
In summary, despite the implications of chav cultures being disrespectful and of
a bullying nature, in the show they’re presented as pretty normal people just
living their lives.
Assignment 2:
Task 1: Prepare flat plans for a new college magazine, to include a front page
and contents page.
Task 2: Create the front page of the magazine using Photoshop and a
