INTRODUCTION

• She is famously known by her title Umm Ammarah (RA).
• Her bravery in defending Islam and the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) makes her a role model for both
men and women.

BACKGROUND
•Nusaybah belonged tothe Banu Najjar tribe of Medina.
•Her first husband was Zaid bin Asim, with whom she had two sons:
1.Habib bin Zaid (RA)
2.Abdullah bin Zaid (RA)
• Later, she was divorced by Zaid bin Asim.
•She later married Ghaziyah bin ‘Amr (RA), with whom she had two sons:
• Khawlah (daughter)
• Tamim (son)
•She accepted Islam through the efforts of Mus’ab bin Umair (RA), who was sent to Medina to spread Islam
before the Prophet’s migration.
4.
ACCEPTANCE OF ISLAM
•Nusaybah (RA) was among the early Muslims of Medina.
• She attended the Second Pledge of Aqabah (Bayʿat al-ʿAqabah al-Thāniyah), where 72 people
pledged their loyalty to Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). She was one of only two women present,
and Nusaybah (RA) was one of them.
• Her early acceptance of Islam shows her courage and dedication at a time when Muslims were
persecuted.
5.
PARTICIPATION IN BATTLEof UHUD
• Nusaybah (RA) did not participate in the Battle of Badr.
• The following year, the Battle of Uhud took place.
• Prophet Muhammad (SAW) consulted his companions on whether to take offensive or defensive action.
• Although the Prophet (SAW) preferred a defensive approach, the majority chose offensive war.
• Abdullah ibn Ubayy, a hypocrite, disagreed and withdrew with 300 men, leaving 700 Muslims to face 3,000
enemies.
6.
• Among theMuslim army were six women, including Nusaybah (RA), assigned to treat the wounded.
• Initially, the Muslims were winning, and the Quraish began to retreat.
• The Prophet (PBUH) instructed 50 archers to hold their position on Mount Uhud no matter what happened.
• 40 archers disobeyed, thinking the battle was over, and came down to collect war spoils.
• Khalid ibn Walid, who was still a non-Muslim at the time, used this opportunity to lead a surprise attack from
the rear.
• Chaos broke out. Many companions fled. A false rumor spread that the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had been
killed.
7.
NUSAYBAH’S HEROIC RESPONSE
•Amidthe chaos, Nusaybah (RA) took up arms to defend the Prophet (PBUH).
•Not knowing if he was alive, she searched the battlefield until she found him surrounded by only a few
companions, including her husband and sons.
•She stood as a human shield, fighting off attackers with sword and shield.
The Prophet (PBUH) later said:
“Wherever I turned to the right or the left, I saw Umm Ammarah fighting to defend me.”
•Her son Abdullah ibn Zaid (RA) was badly wounded. She dressed his wounds and said:
“Get up, my son, and defend the Prophet!”
•The Prophet (PBUH) then pointed out the man who had injured her son. Nusaybah (RA) attacked him
with her sword and brought him down.

The Prophet smiledand said:
“Praise be to Allah who allowed you to take revenge with your own eyes.”
•She was later attacked by Abdullah ibn Qamiah, the man who had just killed Mus’ab ibn Umair (RA),
mistaking him for the Prophet.
•Nusaybah (RA) tried to strike him but missed. He struck her on the shoulder, leaving a deep wound.
•Despite being severely injured, she continued fighting and sustained 13 wounds that day.
•Her entire family — husband and sons — were also wounded, but none of them left the Prophet’s side.
The Prophet (PBUH) said:
“What a family! All of them fought for me.”
