Painlessly Discovering and Monitoring Systems, Services and Compliance
The open source Assimilation Project provides continuous integrated IT discovery and monitoring aimed at risk management and mitigation. It discovers systems, switches, services and dependencies and detailed configuration information. Our discovery uses agents which run local commands, listens to packets without network privileges, and create and update a graph-based configuration management database (CMDB) of your infrastructure and services without setting off security alarms. This CMDB includes services you aren’t monitoring and systems you’ve forgotten about. This is important since about 30% of outsider security breaches come through forgotten systems, and services you’re not monitoring can’t be properly managed. Monitoring is extremely scalable due to its radically distributed architecture. Because discovery informs monitoring, most monitoring doesn’t require any configuration.
Easily extensible discovery enables administrators to let the Assimilation software keep information they are interested in a central database and continually up to date instead of in ad hoc flat files.
This enables straightforward best practice audits (including security audits) without touching every machine. Our graph-based CMDB is natural for visualization and supports interesting queries about root causes and impact analysis. Our future work concentrates on continuous security monitoring - enabling you to easy stay in security compliance.

OSMC 2015: Monitoring Linux and Windows Logs with the Graylog Collector byBer...
Until recently, sending logs to Graylog without using Syslog or any third party program was a bit cumbersome. This has changed since version 1.1. Graylog now has its own log collector which is tightly integrated with the Graylog server and web interface to simplify the management of log shippers.
The Graylog collector runs on several operating systems including Linux, Windows, Mac OS and AIX. It makes it easy to send data like Apache access logs or Windows event logs to Graylog without the need of any third party tools.
In this talk I will introduce the Graylog collector and show how to install and configure it on Linux and Windows. I will also show how to extract structured data from those logs and an example integration with the Icinga monitoring system to alert on critical events.
Making Clouds: Turning OpenNebula into a Product
What does it takes to bring innovations like private clouds to small and medium enterprises? In the course of this talk we will present our experience in creating a self-service toolkit for creating a complete virtualization and cloud platform based on OpenNebula, as well as our experience gathered in tens of installations of all sizes. From scalable storage (with benchmarks!) to autonomic optimization, we will present what in our view is needed to bring private clouds to everyone, what components and additions we created to better solve our customers’ problems (from replacing industrial control systems to medium scale virtual desktop infrastructures), and why OpenNebula has been chosen over other competing cloud toolkits.

For most ecommerce companies, software is not the final deliverable product. It is a research tool, to determine what customers will pay for. To be able to get good data from software, monitoring and analytics must be built into the system. Alerting must come from business requirements and be based on application generated data.
In the traditional operations world, we monitor what is easy, and avoid monitoring that which is difficult. This talk is an attempt to show people that monitoring must be driven by metrics from the CxO office, and then potentially involve technical metrics if needed.
This talk explains why functional and business level monitoring is crucial. We also cover the tradeoffs from a DTAP model to continuous deployment. There will be a brief introduction to a couple of useful monitoring tools for functional monitoring. No special technical skills are expected of the audience, but having a general overview of the monitoring world is a good thing. This talk is not limited to ecommerce companies, but is most applicable to that environment.
OSMC 2015: What's Happening with OpenNMS? by Tarus Balog
In 2015, the OpenNMS application was split into two main branches: OpenNMS Horizon and OpenNMS Meridian.
The main reason was to allow for OpenNMS to improve at a more rapid pace. Where it used to take 18-24 months for a new major OpenNMS release, Horizon gets a new major release every 3-4 months.
This model is very similar to the one Red Hat uses, with Horizon being similar to Fedora and Meridian being like Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Also like RHEL, while Meridian is still 100% open source it is only available through a paid subscription.
This talk will discuss the differences between the two version and highlight the new features available in Horizon, such as the Grafana integration, the new Newts.io back end storage model built on Cassandra and the "minion" remote poller that positions OpenNMS to monitor the Internet of Things.

The OpenNebula Project has come a long way since the first “technology preview” of OpenNebula almost six years ago. During these years we’ve witnessed the rise and hype of the Cloud, the birth and decline of several virtualization technologies, but specially the encouraging and exciting growth of OpenNebula; both as a technology and as an active and engaged community. As a meeting point for OpenNebula users, developers, administrators, builders, integrators and researchers, this Conference represents an opportunity to look back at how the project has grown in the last six years, and to give a peek at what to expect from the project in the near future.
Contrail Virtual Execution Platform
The Contrail Virtual Execution Platform (VEP) allows Cloud administrators to manage data centers and monitor the usage of resources. Users can manage their distributed applications on IaaS Cloud providers under the control of Service Level Agreements (SLA). VEP applications are packaged in the standard OVF format and they are deployed inside Constrained Execution Environments (CEE) derived from the SLA, to support the specification of SLA contracts between users and providers.
These CEE environments allow to define constraints concerning virtual hardware performance, localization and affinity allowing the administrator to configure the monitoring system in order to feed external SLA enforcement services. VEP integrates elasticity management capabilities which can be controlled by external SLA enforcement services. A resource allocator service is integrated to dispatch the virtual components on the physical resources of the provider in accordance with the SLA terms.
The first version of VEP is currently implemented on OpenNebula. This talk presents the implementation of VEP on OpenNebula and discusses some implementation choices such as the resource allocator.
Community Clouds from Scratch
Cloud Computing represents a radical change in the way we organize and use computing resources and storage. The scientific and academic communities face the challenge of not only adapting their procedures to this new paradigm, but also contributing Cloud Computing development and leading its evolution towards open, secure and interoperable computing infrastructures, which will playing a key role in the community clouds paradigm.
The Spanish MEGHA initiative promotes and coordinates contributions to cloud computing R&D, education and management made by institutions affiliated with RedIRIS [7] in Spain. In the first phase (2010–2012), MEGHA validated federated cloud platforms using Opennebula and OCCI [10] to streamline the use of cloud technologies among R&E service centers. Representative infrastructure providers (CESCA, CESGA, PIC), middleware providers (OpenNebula, RedIRIS, OSAmI-Commons) and users (UAB, UOC, UM) together with intermediate/identity/brokers resources (RedIRIS) joined efforts to demonstrate the viability of this approach.
The results stimulated the development of use cases including e-learning platforms on demand (Learning Apps project), a distributed HPC platform (e-Science), and Virtual Labs (VDI) in a hybrid scenario (Academic services).
Next Steps?
As next goal, the Spanish research and academic community is working to assess the possibilities of creating a productive Infrastructure Cloud Computing service within member institutions. With this new approach new challenges appear:
Federated user authentication and authorization mechanisms.
Brokering architecture scenario.
Secure VM image distribution and validation.
A federated cloud accounting system integrating the accounting records of multiple cloud managers and supporting federated cloud governance.
Monitoring and notification of unpredictable changes in availability and readability status.
Security Policies and Service Level Agreements (SLA’s).
CentOS and OpenNebula, a Perfect Match
OpenNebula is a great cloud orchestration and management tool, characterised by its flexibility, durability and focused feature matrix. A feature matrix that is driven largely by real world problem scenarios and real world feedback : something that has been the focus of CentOS project as well. From large scale deployment automation to patch management and state control, the CentOS Project aims to solve real world problems faced by the people who run infrastructure : The Sysadmins administrators and operations teams.
During this talk, I will share why OpenNebula and CentOS Linux are a perfect match and go into some user stories that demonstrate this relationships success in real world scenarios.
Razor: A fresh look at provisioning by David Lutterkort
Razor is a flexible provisioning tool that makes it easy to control how machines are built based on rules and policies. It maintains an inventory of nodes and their hardware characteristics, gathered by booting each node into a discovery image. Razor is an opinionated tool that focuses narrowly on provisioning, but makes it easy to hand off a node after installation to a configuration management system like Puppet to perform more complicated setup tasks and for ongoing maintenance.This talk will give an overview of Razor's capabilities and provide some hands-on examples about its use, including how Razor can be used to build an OpenStack cloud using Puppet Labs' OpenStack modules.

The Flying Circus is an Operations-as-a-Service platform that supports project development teams to run their custom-develop software for clients. Earlier in 2014 we experienced a major data loss and had to perform massive disaster recovery. Unfortunately our Bacula setup was not up to the task and it took us longer and more effort to restore the data than we and our customers expected.
In this case study I’d like to present our public and very honest root cause analysis on how we managed to lose a lot of VMs’ data, how the restore happened, what we learned and how we’re trying to get better. After investigating our options for the future we decided to move away from Bacula’s file and VTL-oriented model and are currently implementing a solution based on CoW-filesystems (ZFS/btrfs), block-layer snapshots and diffing, and a small utility to glue things together.

In 2015, the OpenNMS application was split into two main branches: OpenNMS Horizon and OpenNMS Meridian.
The main reason was to allow for OpenNMS to improve at a more rapid pace. Where it used to take 18-24 months for a new major OpenNMS release, Horizon gets a new major release every 3-4 months.
This model is very similar to the one Red Hat uses, with Horizon being similar to Fedora and Meridian being like Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Also like RHEL, while Meridian is still 100% open source it is only available through a paid subscription.
This talk will discuss the differences between the two version and highlight the new features available in Horizon, such as the Grafana integration, the new Newts.io back end storage model built on Cassandra and the "minion" remote poller that positions OpenNMS to monitor the Internet of Things.
OSMC 2015: Collectd Thresholds Plugin and Icinga by Florian Forster
Capacity planning and monitoring both use system and application performance data. Using the data sampled by collectd at a high frequency allows system engineers to define alerts with short windows while reducing overall system load.
This talk will give a brief introduction to collectd and its "threshold" plugin, including the concepts and configuration involved. It will then explore the different possibilities to combine collectd with Icinga / Nagios and discuss pro and contra of each approach.

When Spotify started in 2006, with just 20 people, they were more worried about selling the idea of music streaming than of setting up monitoring systems. Fast forward to 2015 and
more than 400 engineers are collecting more than 30 million time series from more than 10000 hosts; so how did we get here? The journey has been a long one, with plenty of false starts and growing pains, from scaling systems to scaling teams to scaling the business itself; challenging what we thought we knew about operational monitoring at every step.
This talk is about some of the more interesting challenges we've faced along the way, and about what we've learned so far; covering some of the technical details but primarily focusing on the human aspects, and how our monitoring solutions have both shaped and been shaped by organizational structures and changing engineering practices.

The OpenNebula Project has come a long way since the first “technology preview” of OpenNebula almost six years ago. During these years we’ve witnessed the rise and hype of the Cloud, the birth and decline of several virtualization technologies, but specially the encouraging and exciting growth of OpenNebula; both as a technology and as an active and engaged community. As a meeting point for OpenNebula users, developers, administrators, builders, integrators and researchers, this Conference represents an opportunity to look back at how the project has grown in the last six years, and to give a peek at what to expect from the project in the near future.
Contrail Virtual Execution Platform
The Contrail Virtual Execution Platform (VEP) allows Cloud administrators to manage data centers and monitor the usage of resources. Users can manage their distributed applications on IaaS Cloud providers under the control of Service Level Agreements (SLA). VEP applications are packaged in the standard OVF format and they are deployed inside Constrained Execution Environments (CEE) derived from the SLA, to support the specification of SLA contracts between users and providers.
These CEE environments allow to define constraints concerning virtual hardware performance, localization and affinity allowing the administrator to configure the monitoring system in order to feed external SLA enforcement services. VEP integrates elasticity management capabilities which can be controlled by external SLA enforcement services. A resource allocator service is integrated to dispatch the virtual components on the physical resources of the provider in accordance with the SLA terms.
The first version of VEP is currently implemented on OpenNebula. This talk presents the implementation of VEP on OpenNebula and discusses some implementation choices such as the resource allocator.
Community Clouds from Scratch
Cloud Computing represents a radical change in the way we organize and use computing resources and storage. The scientific and academic communities face the challenge of not only adapting their procedures to this new paradigm, but also contributing Cloud Computing development and leading its evolution towards open, secure and interoperable computing infrastructures, which will playing a key role in the community clouds paradigm.
The Spanish MEGHA initiative promotes and coordinates contributions to cloud computing R&D, education and management made by institutions affiliated with RedIRIS [7] in Spain. In the first phase (2010–2012), MEGHA validated federated cloud platforms using Opennebula and OCCI [10] to streamline the use of cloud technologies among R&E service centers. Representative infrastructure providers (CESCA, CESGA, PIC), middleware providers (OpenNebula, RedIRIS, OSAmI-Commons) and users (UAB, UOC, UM) together with intermediate/identity/brokers resources (RedIRIS) joined efforts to demonstrate the viability of this approach.
The results stimulated the development of use cases including e-learning platforms on demand (Learning Apps project), a distributed HPC platform (e-Science), and Virtual Labs (VDI) in a hybrid scenario (Academic services).
Next Steps?
As next goal, the Spanish research and academic community is working to assess the possibilities of creating a productive Infrastructure Cloud Computing service within member institutions. With this new approach new challenges appear:
Federated user authentication and authorization mechanisms.
Brokering architecture scenario.
Secure VM image distribution and validation.
A federated cloud accounting system integrating the accounting records of multiple cloud managers and supporting federated cloud governance.
Monitoring and notification of unpredictable changes in availability and readability status.
Security Policies and Service Level Agreements (SLA’s).
CentOS and OpenNebula, a Perfect Match
OpenNebula is a great cloud orchestration and management tool, characterised by its flexibility, durability and focused feature matrix. A feature matrix that is driven largely by real world problem scenarios and real world feedback : something that has been the focus of CentOS project as well. From large scale deployment automation to patch management and state control, the CentOS Project aims to solve real world problems faced by the people who run infrastructure : The Sysadmins administrators and operations teams.
During this talk, I will share why OpenNebula and CentOS Linux are a perfect match and go into some user stories that demonstrate this relationships success in real world scenarios.
Razor: A fresh look at provisioning by David Lutterkort
Razor is a flexible provisioning tool that makes it easy to control how machines are built based on rules and policies. It maintains an inventory of nodes and their hardware characteristics, gathered by booting each node into a discovery image. Razor is an opinionated tool that focuses narrowly on provisioning, but makes it easy to hand off a node after installation to a configuration management system like Puppet to perform more complicated setup tasks and for ongoing maintenance.This talk will give an overview of Razor's capabilities and provide some hands-on examples about its use, including how Razor can be used to build an OpenStack cloud using Puppet Labs' OpenStack modules.

The Flying Circus is an Operations-as-a-Service platform that supports project development teams to run their custom-develop software for clients. Earlier in 2014 we experienced a major data loss and had to perform massive disaster recovery. Unfortunately our Bacula setup was not up to the task and it took us longer and more effort to restore the data than we and our customers expected.
In this case study I’d like to present our public and very honest root cause analysis on how we managed to lose a lot of VMs’ data, how the restore happened, what we learned and how we’re trying to get better. After investigating our options for the future we decided to move away from Bacula’s file and VTL-oriented model and are currently implementing a solution based on CoW-filesystems (ZFS/btrfs), block-layer snapshots and diffing, and a small utility to glue things together.
