This document discusses mathematics and why the author chose it as their major. It begins by providing definitions of mathematics from famous mathematicians, who described it as the "Queen of Sciences" and important for understanding the universe. The author explains they grew interested in arithmetic as a student and enjoyed manipulating numbers and questioning how theories can be applied. They were drawn to fields that use mathematics like engineering, medicine, and space. The document also discusses Gaussian curvature and how shapes can have positive, negative, or zero curvature depending on how paper is wrapped around them. It concludes by saying the author's degree could enable careers like teaching, educating, or consulting where they help people and enjoy traveling.

It provides Airtel doorstep service, address verification, nationwide courier service, and acts as an agent for Dutch-Bangla mobile banking. The company has a head office in Dhaka as well as several regional offices, and uses a hierarchical management structure led by a Managing Director.
This document provides information about the 3Com 3C10226PE phone and details how to purchase it from Launch 3 Telecom. Launch 3 Telecom is an experienced telecom equipment supplier that offers the 3C10226PE phone for sale, along with services like repairs, installation, and asset recovery. Journal writing is a learning tool that allows students to reflect on topics of personal interest, observations, and new information. The purpose is to clarify and enhance thinking skills. There are many types of journals, including personal journals for feelings and opinions, dialogue journals for conversations, and subject-specific journals for math, science, art, and reading responses. Journals should be written informally and can include drawings, diagrams, and experiments with writing style. Regular journaling helps improve writing and supports learning.

This document provides an overview of Abraham Wald and his work during World War II at the Statistical Research Group (SRG). Wald used mathematical thinking to determine that armor should be placed on the less damaged parts of aircraft returning from missions, namely the engines, because the more damaged areas like the fuselage could withstand hits while still returning, but hits to the engines would cause the plane to be lost completely. His recommendations informed changes to aircraft armor placement that likely saved many planes and lives. The story illustrates how mathematical analysis can reveal insights that are counterintuitive but provide a truer understanding of the situation.
This document provides instructions and notes for an origami workshop. It discusses how origami can be used to teach mathematics concepts and aligns specific origami models and folding techniques with common core math standards. The workshop will demonstrate an origami box, leaping frog, and octagon star model. Participants are encouraged to think about the mathematical elements of each fold such as shapes, angles, symmetry and spatial relationships. Origami is presented as an engaging hands-on method to help students visualize and understand mathematics.
The document provides descriptions of 5 of Chuck Carter's signature themes:
1) Strategic - Seeing patterns and scenarios, evaluating obstacles, and selecting the best strategy.
2) WooWoo - Enjoying meeting new people, building rapport, and connecting with strangers.
3) Communication - Enlivening ideas and information through stories, examples, and vivid language to engage listeners.
4) Input - Being inquisitive and collecting various information and objects of interest to store for potential future use.
5) Includer - Actively including people to expand groups and avoid exclusion, believing all people deserve to feel included.
This document discusses drawing and the exploration of different drawing processes and styles. It provides quotes about drawing from various artists and illustrates that drawing is a fundamental part of an illustrator's practice. Students are asked to experiment with different words to draw with to unlock their expressive abilities and develop new ways of working with drawing. The goal is to think creatively about drawing and use it as a tool for research and communication.
This document provides summaries for 10 children's books about various topics such as mathematics, colors, inventions, the human body, and Martin Luther King Jr. The books use creative methods like rhyming, activities with objects like M&Ms, and 3D components to engage students' interest while teaching about their subjects.
The document discusses building student engagement through developing skills of interest. It identifies six themes of fun in learning: choice, relevance, engagement, active learning, teacher attitude, and camaraderie. It also discusses four discovery skills of innovation: associating, questioning, observation, and experimentation. Finally, it provides examples of activities teachers can use to develop these skills, such as having students make lists of what they enjoyed each day or conduct informal surveys.
The document discusses feedback from educators, students, and parents about Keri Smith and her book Wreck This Journal. Educators praise the book for providing creative, hands-on activities that engage students in non-traditional ways. Students say the book has helped them discover their creativity and think in new ways. Parents are surprised by how much their children, including those who struggle with reading, enjoy the book and spending hours completing the activities. The book is seen as a fun and effective way to bring out students' creative sides.

6. Famous Mathematicians quoted…
Mathematics is “the Queen of Sciences”
- Carl Friedrich Gauss
“…as far as the laws of mathematics refer to reality, they
are not certain; and as far as they are certain, they do not
refer to reality.”
- Albert Einstein
“The universe cannot be read until we have learned the language and become
familiar with the characters in which it is written. It is written in mathematical
language....Without these, one is wandering about in a dark labyrinth.”
- GalileoGalilei
9. The reasons for choosing
mathematics as my major:
■ I grew an interest in basic arithmetic as an elementary student; I loved manipulating
numbers using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
– I love how mathematics worked and questioned why things work the way they do.
■ Calculus,Algebra, and Geometry opened up my mind about how numbers and theories can
be applied to the world.
■ Mathematics is important in fields such as engineering, medicine, finance, space, etc.
11. Gaussian Curvature (k)
Imagine a flat piece of paper…
The paper is considered to have a Gaussian curvature of 0. Even if you bend it or roll it into a tube
or cone, the Gaussian curvature is still 0.As long as the paper have no wrinkles or tears when you
flatten it, the shape itself remains 0.
Take the paper and wrap it around a sphere. No matter how much you try
to make it smooth, you will wrinkle the sheet. If you create wrinkles on the
sheet, the shape will have a positive Gaussian curvature.
If you try to wrap the paper over a saddle-shaped surface, the paper will tear or
even wrinkle a lot in the middle. If the paper tears and wrinkles to the middle,
the shape has a negative curvature.
12. In nature, plants grow
leaves that can be
curved or wrinkled,
depending on the rate
that the edges of the
leaf grow, which can
change the Gaussian
curvature.
15. Life Mission
■ While mathematics offers a wide range of options I can choose from, I am still deciding
on what career path I would like to pursue.
■ I’ve always enjoyed helping people out, whether it involves planning, tutoring, or
giving advice to friends and family.
– Possibly become a teacher, educator, or consultant
■ I love to travel around and explore new cities; thus, I hope that my career involves me
traveling and exploring.
