October 25, 2010 Campaign Update Charlotte, NC
Over the past few months, I’ve issued a series of email newsletters explaining where I stand
on some of the most important issues of the day – from economic development to education
to the environment. I hope that I’ve given you a clear understanding of where I stand, and
perhaps even managed to tell you a few things you didn’t already know. I know I have
benefited greatly from the tremendous feedback I’ve received from many of you.
There remain several topics – including healthcare, transportation, and public safety – that
each could warrant their very own newsletter. Rather than bombard your inbox with a raft of
newsletters in the week remaining before election day, I invite you instead to visit my
website, www.RuthSamuelson.com, where you’ll find my views on these and many other
issues spelled out under the “Issues” tab. While you’re there, I hope you’ll take two
minutes (and 35 seconds) to watch my first ever YouTube video, which has just been
posted!
This week I’d like to applaud those who’ve already done their civic duty by voting early, and
remind everyone who still has a ballot to cast in Mecklenburg County that it includes a long
list of judges, as well as three city bond referenda and a constitutional amendment. They
deserve careful consideration before you get to the voting booth.
In my Oct. 11 newsletter, I made my suggestions for where to look for judicial endorsements,
and there’s plenty of information out there to help you make up your own mind on the bond
referenda. But I would especially like to encourage you to give some advance thought as to
how you’ll vote on the constitutional amendment, which would bar convicted felons from
running for sheriff in this state.
This amendment was placed on the ballot by the legislature in reaction to an unusual
situation in one county, where voters actually ended up rejecting a felon who recently ran
for sheriff. There’s been very little media coverage or public debate of the issue, and I think
that’s a shame, because any time we alter this important document it should be done only
after thorough deliberation by the entire electorate. If you’d like to read the text of the
amendment, it can be found at the state board of elections website, which you can find
under the “Helpful Links” tab on my homepage.
Regardless of how you plan to vote on the amendment, I hope you’ll vote. In Mecklenburg,
early voting sites are open from 8 am to 7 pm through Friday, then on Saturday from 10 am to
1 pm. After that, you’ll have to wait until Tuesday, Nov. 2 to make your voice heard!
Best wishes,
Ruth Samuelson
District 104, Mecklenburg County
P.S. In the midst of the hectic election season, I have neglected to let you all in my family’s
latest joyous news: my eldest son, Bobby, recently became engaged to McKinsey Harris.
Though Bobby has spent the last few years in Austin, I’m pleased to report that he and his
bride (who also grew up in Charlotte) will likely be returning to their hometown after they
wed next year!
