Students in Ms. Jones’s class are going to begin a new project on insects this week. They will be analyzing the physical characteristics of different insects under a microscope. Students will then select 3 insects to illustrate on a poster board and present to the class. Also, students will turn in a 3-5 page (double spaced) paper on their findings along with research done at home. They should include a works cited page in MLA format with 3 sources. Finally, students should include answers for the questions below in their paper. Essential Question: 1. What do we know about insects?Unit Questions: 1. How do insects help our environment?2. How can we help protect insects?Content Questions: 1. What are some examples of Insects that pollinate Earth’s plants?2. How do insects grow?3. In what ways do insects benefit and/or harm humans? Objectives: Students will be able to identify specific characteristics of three individual insects. Students will be able present a brief illustration and description to their classmates on three selected insects. Grade: 9-12Standard: SC.9-12.ENT.28 GA-SC.9-12.ENT.28; Entomology, Insect Evolution, Science Science STANDARD: Describes the development of insects over time. Project-Based Learning creates a curriculum that promotes deeper learning amongst students. By engaging students in projects, they learn through experience and example. This way of learning focuses on the evaluation of students' knowledge through demonstration rather than test results. I plan to have students present a project for each unit such as this one. I will assign the projects in a different subject area each time. We will also do many short in-class projects, as well. Reminders to parents: This is a lab; hence, students should wear long pants, closed toed shoes, and pulled up hair. Children should have their lab safety forms turned in. Remind your child that no horseplay is tolerated in the lab and students will be removed if necessary.
