Film Trailers

Film trailers were around for quite a long time but people didn’t watch them as they were at the end
of the film you were watching as people just left when the film had ended. People that made the
film trailers realised that the trailers weren’t being viewed by members of the public so they then
moved the film trailers the the beginning of the film as then they were being viewed. The name just
stuck.

User Generated content

User generated content means that what ever you put on facebook and twitter like pictures or
videos. That is your content as it is what you put up on that site and what you use as the user.

Electronic Learning

Otherwise known as E-Learning, It provides the student to study online or take their course online if
they live too far away from the college. It is a good way to study at home if you are working or have

children as you can do the course in your own time and pass. Another way of using E-Learning is at
high schools when they are moving from year 6-7 by giving them a tour of the high school and where
all the departments are in the school so they have a rough idea of where they are going in the new
school.

Platforms

Kiosks

A small open-fronted hut or cubicle from which newspapers, refreshments, tickets, etc., are sold.
These are handy in malls if you get lost in the mall and you can easily find you way around you can
also check where the shop is so you’re not wondering around. Kiosks are also used in cinemas by
purchasing your ticket by using your credit card instead of getting in the queue so it saves time. They
are also in schools for a map or signing into the school so they know that you are in the building.

Email

Email is known as electronic mail and you can send messages to more than one recipient from one
author. E-Mails are used practically everywhere if you need to send a letter it will be sent straight
away instead of normal post that will take 2-3 to get to you. You can also sent attachments like a
spread sheet or a word document containing important information quickly. The benefits of using
email is that it is quick and easy to use to send files to another person and also that it is easy to send
emails to another person then sending an ordinary mail. It is your own private mail that only you and
the other person can access.People can send blind carbon copies and it causes a lot of trouble in the

work force, spamming and information over load is also a problem. Also there is an attachment size
limitation.

WWW

The World Wide Web is a system of interlinked hypertext documents accessed via the Internet.
The World Wide Web can be used for anything you wish if you want to know about penguins for
example it will appear, you can basically research anything you want.
You are able to access information from anywhere but you can also make friends from across the
globe.
You can access any data at any location as long as it's on a server using the World Wide Web. That
benefit highly benefits school systems.
There is also the benefit of communication to friends from far away.
The biggest disadvantage of World Wide Web is the ever increasing gap between internet have's and
have not's. With the increasing use of WWW in developed countries and among different classes
within under developed and developing countries, those without access to the internet are
constantly losing opportunities in work related fields.

Mobile devices
By Sheilee Cherry

An electronic telecommunications device often referred to as a cellular phone or cellphone. Mobile
phones connect to a wireless communications network through radio wave or satellite
transmissions. Most mobile phones provide voice communications, Short Message Service(SMS),
Multimedia Message Service (MMS), and newer phones may also provide Internet services such as
Web browsing and e-mail.Depending on what type of cell phone, they can do anything from sending
a simple text message to streaming live television. With technology increasing at the rapid rate it has
been, newer and newer features are being added to mobile devices. You can carry a mobile phone
with you so you don't miss important calls. If you are lost, you can call for directions. If you are in an
accident, you can call the police or ambulance - and if the phone has a camera, you can take pictures
of the accident. You can listen to music, text, and play games when you're bored. Most mobile
phones have a calculator and a phone book. You can use a mobile phone to call your customers or
boss if you are running late to a meeting. You can surf Internet & Connect with the whole world by
Mobile. You can chat & video conference. Keep in touch with friends and family. Good for
emergencies. Employees can keep in touch at all times. Customers can contact staff 24/7.Phones
have internet connection. More work available. They have cameras. You can check your emails. Can
be used worldwide. It can fit in your pocket. They can damage your ear. Sometimes the reception is
poor in some areas, limiting your connectivity (you can't talk underground or on planes). People use
the phone while they are driving, and this can cause problems .They can limit your face to face time
with friends and family. They can get you in trouble at school. Can be expensive. Can be hard to find
the right package. Can ruin the connection to the computer. Staff can abuse their phones if they have
internet connection. Can be hard for older people to use. Because of their smaller size, they can be
easy to lose.

Image/Video Capture
Image capture is mostly used digitally now using a mobile phone for instance. Cameras used to be on
films but now with digital cameras you can take them anywhere they are lighter and have no film so
you can take as many pictures as you need. Another way to capture an image is by using a scanner.
These aren’t used as much but if you have an image on a piece of paper you can use the scanner to
scan what is on the page and then have it digitally on your computer. It is good for uploading art that
you have drawn on paper to your computer.

Compression

Is a data encoding method that compresses data by losing some of it? It stores files and combine
them into archives that take up less physical space in memory. When using the lossy technique the
file size will become smaller which is not a bad thing at all, this may be used when uploading an
image onto the web, but the image will quality will become worse. The compression technique
makes the file size smaller than the lossless.

Digital file formats

Image file formats are standardized means of organizing and storing digital images. Image files are
composed of digital data in one of these formats that can be rasterized for use on a computer
display or printer. An image file format
may store data in uncompressed,
compressed, or vector formats. Once
rasterized, an image becomes a grid of
pixels, each of which has a number of
bits to designate its color equal to the
color depth of the device displaying
it.The TIFF (Tagged Image File Format)
format is a flexible format that
normally saves 8 bits or 16 bits per
color (red, green, blue) for 24-bit and 48-bit totals, respectively, usually using either the TIFF or TIF
filename extension. TIFF's flexibility can be both an advantage and disadvantage, since a reader that
By Sheilee Cherry

reads every type of TIFF file does not exist.TIFFs can be lossy and lossless; some offer relatively good
lossless compression for bi-level (black&white) images.

The BMP file format (Windows bitmap) handles graphics files within the Microsoft Windows OS.
Typically, BMP files are uncompressed, hence they are large; the advantage is their simplicity and
wide acceptance in Windows programs.

Streaming methods

Streaming media is multimedia that is constantly received by and presented to an end-user while
being delivered by a provider. Its verb form, "to stream", refers to the process of delivering media in
this manner; the term refers to the delivery method of the medium rather than the medium itself.

A client media player can begin playing the data (such as a movie) before the entire file has been
transmitted. Distinguishing delivery method from the media distributed applies specifically to
telecommunications networks, as most other delivery systems are either inherently streaming (e.g.,
radio, television) or inherently nonstreaming (e.g., books, video cassettes, audio CDs). For example,
in the 1930s, muzak was among the earliest popularly available streaming media; nowadays Internet
television is a common form of streamed media. The term "streaming media" can apply to media
other than video and audio such as live closed captioning, stock ticker, and real-time text, which are
all considered "streaming text".Live streaming, delivering live over the Internet, involves a camera
for the media, an encoder to digitize the content, a media publisher, and a content delivery network
to distribute and deliver the content.

Media players

Media player is a term typically used to describe computer software for playing back
multimediafiles. While many media players can play both audio and video, others focus only on one
media type or the other. Such players are known as either audio players or video players and often
have a user interface tailored for the specific media type.

Windows Media Player (abbreviated WMP) is a media player and media library application
developed by Microsoft that is used for playing audio, video and viewing images on personal
computers running the Microsoft Windowsoperating system, as well as on Pocket PC and Windows
Mobile-based devices. Editions of Windows Media Player were also released for Mac OS, Mac OS
Xand Solaris but development of these has since been discontinued.

QuickTime is an extensible multimedia framework developed by Apple Inc., capable of handling
various formats of digital video, picture, sound, panoramic images, and interactivity. The classic
version of QuickTime is available for Windows XP and later, as well as Mac OS X Leopard and later
operating systems. A more recent version, QuickTime X, is currently available on Mac OS X Snow
Leopard, Lion, and Mountain Lion.

VLC media player (also known as VLC) is a highly portablefree and open-sourcemedia player and
streaming mediaserver written by the VideoLAN project. It is a cross-platform media player, with
versions for Microsoft Windows, OS X, GNU/Linux, Android, BSD, Solaris, iOS, Syllable, BeOS,
MorphOS, QNX and eComStation.VLC media player supports many audio and video compression
methods and file formats, including DVD-video, video CD and streaming protocols. It is able to
stream over computer network and to transcode multimedia files.

Aspect ratio

The aspect ratio of an image describes the proportional relationship between its width and its
height.

It is commonly expressed as two numbers separated by a colon, as in 16:9. For an x:y aspect ratio, no
matter how big or small the image is, if the width is divided into x units of equal length and the
height is measured using this same length unit, the height will be measured to be y units. For
example, consider a group of images, all with an aspect ratio of 16:9. One image is 16 inches wide
and 9 inches high. Another image is 16 centimeters wide and 9 centimeters high. A third is 8 yards
wide and 4.5 yards high.

The most common aspect ratios used today in the presentation of films in movie theaters are 1.85:1
and 2.39:1. Two common videographic aspect ratios are 4:3 (1.33:1), the universal video format of
the 20th century and 16:9 (1.77:1), universal for high-definition television and European digital
television. Other cinema and video aspect ratios exist, but are used infrequently.
