Tank bulging occurs when the pressure inside a tank exceeds the strength of the tank walls, causing them to bow outward in a dome shape. This can happen if too much liquid or vapor is pumped into a tank, if the tank overheats, or if corrosion weakens the metal. Tank bulging is dangerous and can cause the tank to rupture, so operators must carefully monitor tank levels, temperatures, and integrity.
