IoT applications consist of Devices, the cloud and everything in between. Building IoT application, therefore, involves lots of moving parts. Different considerations and architectures are applicable to each of IoT application component. In this workshop, we show you what we learnt from working with customers and building large IoT applications. We will walk you through on how to rapidly build IoT applications using a framework called Connected Device Framework (CDF).

• Open dashboard UI
• Find IP address of your Raspberry Pi, SSH in: ( pi | iot216 )
• Explore directory structure, talk through files
• Look at config.json (note the device id and other config)
• Explore provisioning and discovery modules
• Run device python code (device.py)
• See device in dashboard (refresh)
• Click on device, explore temperature and humidity (manipulate with finger or breath)
• Open advanced tab, see raw messages (will be everyone's messages)
• Subscribe in UI to new topic (could be other device, could be test topic)
• Modify and run test publisher (publish.py) to publish to your subscribed topic

As each team works through the exercise, you discuss ideas, give advice, and share challenges when building on AWS. SRV312_Taking Serverless to the Edge

AWS Lambda enables you to run code without provisioning or managing servers. Today, you can write your Lambda functions once and execute them everywhere your end viewers are present with AWS Lambda@Edge. This session walks through multiple examples of web applications that use the serverless programming model for authentication, customization, and security to address the question of how to design and deploy intelligent web applications with AWS Lambda@Edge and Amazon CloudFront. The startup DataDome will also share its experience with Lambda@Edge and CloudFront, and how it simplified the onboarding process for its customers. Deployed globally on CloudFront PoP locations, their bot protection service can now be activated in one-click through the AWS console.

CON318_Interstella 8888 Monolith to Microservices with Amazon ECS

Interstella 8888 is an intergalactic trading company that deals in rare resources, but their antiquated monolithic logistics systems are causing the business to lose money. Join this workshop to get hands-on experience deploying Docker containers as you break Intersella 8888’s aging monolithic application into containerized microservices. Using Amazon ECS and the Application Load Balancer, you will create API-based microservices and deploy them leveraging integrations with other AWS services. AWS credits are provided. Bring a laptop, and have an active AWS account."

Building Manageable Windows Workloads - ARC324 - re:Invent 2017

Panasonic and the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) launched a partnership to build a connected transportation program in which real-time data would be shared across vehicles, infrastructure, and people to improve safety and mobility on the road – the V2X Deployment Program. To prove its capabilities initially, Panasonic built a fully functional Minimum Viable Product (MVP) in less than six months, using services such as AWS IoT, AWS Lambda, Amazon RDS, Amazon ECS, Amazon EC2, Amazon S3, and more. See how customers will synthesize data from various edge devices (roadside units) on the highways and send it to AWS IoT and analytics services for processing and intelligible actions. We discuss AWS IOT capabilities, design patterns, customer architecture, challenges faced, and lessons learned. Learn best practices and common issues to address to succeed with similar smart city projects.

Tracking and Optimizing Ad Monetization for Your Mobile App - MBL307 - re:Inv...

With the "freemium" model as the new norm for mobile apps, developers are supplementing their revenue with ad-based monetization. To maximize ad revenue, developers are using multiple ad networks as a best practice. This has created the need to track performance across ad networks and optimize for maximum revenue and fill rate. In this session, we create an app with ads from multiple ad networks. We illustrate how ad revenue can be maximized across these networks by tracking key metrics. Finally, we provide examples of segmenting users based on ad interactions and attributes, to further optimize ad monetization.

These techniques are no longer optional for great user experiences yet are difficult to engineer and scale from scratch. In this session you’ll get a deep dive on using AWS AppSync to enable your applications for offline access, including optimistic updates on lossy connections, with just a few lines of code. You’ll learn how application data synchronization takes place with the cloud, how you can control the process, programming interfaces for native applications such as iOS and JavaScript based applications across the web, React Native, and Ionic. Building .NET-based Serverless Architectures and Running .NET Core Microservi...

In this session, we first look at common approaches to refactoring common legacy .NET applications to microservices and AWS serverless architectures. We also look at modern approaches to .NET-based architectures on AWS. We then elaborate on running .NET Core microservices in Docker containers natively on Linux in AWS while examining the use of AWS SDK and .NET Core platform. We also look at the use of the various AWS services such as Amazon SNS, Amazon SQS, Amazon Kinesis, and Amazon DynamoDB, which provide the backbone of the platform. For example, Experian Consumer Services runs a large ecommerce platform that is now cloud based in the AWS. We look at how they went from monolithic platform to microservices, primarily in .NET Core. With a heavy push to move to Java and open source, we look at the development process, which started in the beta days of .NET Core, and how the direction Microsoft was going allowed them to use existing C# skills while pushing themselves to innovate in AWS. The large, single team of Windows based developers was broken down into several small teams to allow for rapid development into an all Linux environment.

Backed by the NVIDIA Tesla M60 GPUs, G3 instances offer unparalleled power and flexibility to do complex modeling, 3D visualization, computer aided design, seismic visualization, video encoding. G3 instances are the first Amazon EC2 instances to support NVIDIA GRID Virtual Workstation capabilities, with streaming support for four monitors each with up to 4K resolution, and hardware encoding to support up to 10 High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC) H.265 1080p30 streams or up to 18 H.264 1080p30 streams per GPU for faster video frame processing and improved image fidelity. In this session we will highlight two criticial Media workloads Video Editing via remote application streaming and Broadcast Playout origination from the AWS cloud. We will have Pop Media discuss their remote video editing in the cloud that enables secure remote, real-time editorial and image processing session views.
