New Emerging Civil War Series Title Takes Readers on
the Ultimate Road Trip through the Gettysburg Campaign
EL DORADO HILLS, CA: June 14, 2016 – Savas Beatie recently announced the
release of the latest in their popular Emerging Civil War series, The Last Road
North: A Guide to the Gettysburg Campaign, 1863, by authors Rob Orrison and Dan
Welch, which takes readers step by step through the Gettysburg Campaign.
A string of battlefield victories through 1862 had culminated in the spring of 1863
with Lee’s greatest victory yet: the battle of Chancellorsville. Propelled by the
momentum of that supreme moment, confident in the abilities of his men, Lee
decided to once more take the fight to the Yankees and launched his army on another
invasion of the North. An appointment with destiny awaited in the little
Pennsylvania college town of Gettysburg.
Historians Robert Orrison and Dan Welch follow in the footsteps of the Army of Northern Virginia and the
Army of the Potomac as the two foes cat-and-mouse their way northward, ultimately clashing in the costliest
battle in North American history. Based on the Civil War Trails system and packed with dozens of lesser-
known sites related to the Gettysburg campaign, The Last Road North: A Guide to the Gettysburg Campaign
offers the ultimate Civil War road trip, including the Confederate advance, the Union response, Jeb Stuart’s
ride, the battle, and the retreat from Gettysburg.
“Writing and planning out the narrative for Last Road North was a rewarding experience,” said Orrison. “I
hope the book will encourage readers to visit all the sites in the Gettysburg campaign and allow them to put
the battle into a larger context.”
“The battlefield at Gettysburg receives over one million visitors annually; however, dozens of historic
locations that influenced the outcome of the Gettysburg campaign rarely receive the attention or
understanding they deserve,” added Welch. “Writing the narrative of The Last Road North was an amazing
opportunity to share these stories and places with current and future generations of Civil War historians and
enthusiasts alike.”
About the Authors: Rob Orrison has worked with most of the Gettysburg campaign sites through his
position on the board of Civil War Trails. Rob, a contributor to Emerging Civil War, has been working in the
public history field for more than 20 years. He currently serves as the historic site operation supervisor for
Prince William County, Virginia. Dan Welch works as a seasonal park ranger at Gettysburg National
Military Park. Previously, Dan was the education programs coordinator for the Gettysburg Foundation, the
non-profit partner of Gettysburg National Military Park. A contributor to Emerging Civil War, Dan currently
serves as a primary and secondary educator with a public school district in northeast Ohio.
