Expo is the most significant annual health and social care event in the calendar, uniting more NHS and care leaders, commissioners, clinicians, voluntary sector partners, innovators and media than any other health and care event.
Expo 15 returned to Manchester and was hosted once again by NHS England. Around 5000 people a day from health and care, the voluntary sector, local government, and industry joined together at Manchester Central Convention Centre for two packed days of speakers, workshops, exhibitions and professional development.
This year, Expo was more relevant and engaging than ever before, happening within the first 100 days of the new Government, and almost 12 months after the publication of the NHS Five Year Forward View. It was also a great opportunity to check on and learn from the progress of Greater Manchester as the area prepares to take over a £6 billion devolved health and social care budget, pledging to integrate hospital, community, primary and social care and vastly improve health and well-being.

THE PROBLEM
In large institutions there is no good way to target
opportunities for collaboration around innovation.
Professionals working in a variety of contexts -
from regulatory agencies to social innovation labs
- have a hard time identifying who among their
colleagues and counterparts has the experience
and expertise to improve decision-making and
problem-solving.
OUR GOVERNING INNOVATION CHALLENGE
FINDING EXPERTISE WITHIN AND ACROSS LARGE INSTITUTIONS
Titles and credentials don’t capture
real world know-how
Government projects are branded as
institutional achievements
Lack of well developed taxonomies
for new domains (e.g. data science or
citizen science)

CASE
Innovation is critical to enabling NHS
England to achieve its ambitions to ramp
up the pace and scale of change,
and deliver better outcomes
for patients and for the NHS.
With the Five Year Forward Plan NHS
England has clearly articulated the
fundamental role of data and innovation
in achieving these ambitions at all levels
of the organization.
NHS + FIVE YEAR FORWARD PLAN
WHAT WILL THE FUTURE LOOK LIKE?
A new relationship with patients
and communities
New models of care
5. 5
Imagine an Expert Network for NHS England around Public Data Science where
expertise can be made manifest and searchable. To include:
Those with with experience in data science in the areas of open data or big data
Those working within or outside of NHS England to expand open data programs
Those using data to track health care outcomes
Those knowledgeable about applying data science practices and tools to
improve health outcomes

NHS + PUBLIC DATA SCIENCE EXPERTISE

WHAT WE WANT TO LEARN
How can we make innovation actionable?
How can we make manifest the expertise and capacity for innovation
that already exists within and across public institutions?
How can we connect innovators across domains and disciplines?
How can we connect innovators across institutions?

NETWORK OF INNOVATORS AT #EXPO15NHS
As part of an ongoing project to understand the demand
and capacity to use data by NHS in England, NHS is
collaborating with the GovLab to test the Network of
Innovators expert finder at the 2015 NHS Health and
Care Innovation Expo. By using the tool at the Expo and
sharing your feedback, you will share invaluable learning
about ways to use new technology to leverage expertise
to improve healthcare.
