Nero, the Roman emperor, enjoyed racing chariots but had no skill as a racer. He raced at the Circus Maximus, an outdoor arena that seated 250,000 people and hosted daily chariot races. Though the crowds initially cheered for Nero, he proved to be a terrible racer, even trying camels and racing at night. To ensure he always won, Nero cheated by hitching 10 horses to his chariot instead of the regulation 4. Though he continued winning through dangerous cheating, the races became dull since no one else had a chance, and Nero remained an unskilled but unwillingly crowned champion of the Circus Maximus.
