Mandela was a stoic. He echoes Epictetus when he writes, “prison and the authorities conspire to rob each man of his dignity. No man or institution can rob me of my dignity because I refuse to part with it for any price or pressure. I never seriously considered the possibility that I would not emerge from prison one day.”
Bill Clinton tells us in the foreword, “I once asked Mandela to describe his long walk from prison to the president. ‘When you are young and strong,’ he told me, ‘you can stay alive on hatred. And I did, more many years.’ Then one day after years of imprisonment, physical and emotional abuse, and separation from his family, Mandela said, ‘I realized that they could take everything from me except my mind and my heart. They could never take these from me. I still had control over my mind and my heart. And I decided never to give them away.’ ”
Many Americans are quick to condemn anyone remotely related to Communism. Nelson Mandela’s autobiography paints himself as first a compassionate Christian, and also a rather reluctant Communist, reluctantly forced in communism by the brutally repressive policies of the Boer Afrikaner regime. We cannot deny that autobiographies always paint their authors in as favorable a light as possible, but we urge the reader to suspend judgement, open his ears and heart and allow the author to tell his story.

Mandela was a stoic. He echoes Epictetus when he writes, “prison and the authorities conspire to rob each man of his dignity. No man or institution can rob me of my dignity because I refuse to part with it for any price or pressure. I never seriously considered the possibility that I would not emerge from prison one day.”
Bill Clinton tells us in the foreword, “I once asked Mandela to describe his long walk from prison to the president. ‘When you are young and strong,’ he told me, ‘you can stay alive on hatred. And I did, more many years.’ Then one day after years of imprisonment, physical and emotional abuse, and separation from his family, Mandela said, ‘I realized that they could take everything from me except my mind and my heart. They could never take these from me. I still had control over my mind and my heart. And I decided never to give them away.’ ”
Many Americans are quick to condemn anyone remotely related to Communism. Nelson Mandela’s autobiography paints himself as first a compassionate Christian, and also a rather reluctant Communist, reluctantly forced in communism by the brutally repressive policies of the Boer Afrikaner regime. We cannot deny that autobiographies always paint their authors in as favorable a light as possible, but we urge the reader to suspend judgement, open his ears and heart and allow the author to tell his story.

O’Connell, Healthcare Consultant of Barrington, New Hampshire commented recently that predictably, not even minutes following this year’s Emmy Awards, claims of racial bias erupted on the internet and the next morning on the boob. Not because blacks were under represented, in fact blacks were nominated for and the recipients of more Emmy’s than ever before in history. So, why the uproar? In our typically politically correct society, diversity is no longer something to celebrate when it occurs, but to loudly complain about past years of not measuring up to politically correct standards.

Opioid addiction...
Dr. Michael J. O’Connell, New Hampshire recently commented that the horn blowing by politicians and law enforcement over “complicity of physicians in the heroin crisis” is an attempt to affix and thereby shift blame for the recent spate of overdose deaths. The current theory goes that by ‘over-prescribing’ opioids to patients in the ER, post operatively for pain control, and in family practitioner offices for chronic maladies, that the consumers ‘become’ addicts, get ‘hooked’. This is utter nonsense, and for which there is not one shred of evidence. While an understandable layman’s intuitive conclusion, but nonsense nonetheless.

O’Connell, Healthcare Consultant, Barrington, New Hampshire commented that a reportedly racist ‘chant’ caught on a privately made video at a large Oklahoma university fraternity has resulted in closure of the offending SAE fraternity on campus and expulsion of two drunken student ‘chanters’ a couple of months ago. This seemingly extreme action by the University of Oklahoma raises many questions….such as how does freedom of speech enter into this equation?

Confederate flag removal debate...
Dr. Michael J. O’Connell, Healthcare Consultant, Barrington, New Hampshire, commented that in the wake of the tragic Charleston shootings a few months ago, Confederate flags that dotted the south have mostly come down. My first reaction, I assume consistent with that of the majority of Americans, was one of surprise that the flag was still commonplace, and even in public arenas. As Obama said in his eulogy, the flag, among other things, is a symbol of a failed government, one based on the institution of slavery. Why retain the symbol, some 150 years after the regime’s demise? The answer to this must be very complex as to elude the comprehension of most Americans.

Dr. Michael J. O’Connell, New Hampshire recently commented that Dr. Sanjay Gupta, former neurosurgeon and now medical correspondent for CNN, did a three-part series looking at medical marijuana. In part #2, he briefly presented some evidence for the usefulness of certain strains of weed that have shown promise for various medical maladies. There seems to be little controversy over applications of cannabinoids to the nausea and poor appetite often experienced during treatment for cancer.

Race sensitivity...
Dr. Michael J. O’Connell, New Hampshire recently queried, “Is it my imagination or are blacks more sensitive than ever to race, race language (i.e. racist), racial equality, equal pay for equal race, etc.?”
Am I wrong to suggest that blacks compared to just ten or twenty years ago are better educated, have more “high level” jobs, dominate all major sports, nearly dominate the entertainment industry and news outlets? Yet we hear more from (usually self appointed) black spokesmen that their race is disadvantaged. Clearly blacks have a ways to go (there needs to be more black NBA owners for example), but would one not think that if progress is made at a faster pace than ever before, that the ‘spokesmen’ would tone down the rhetoric?
And where does white man's guilt and struggle for ‘atonement’ end, and responsibility of the black man for the black man begin? With a disproportionate number of blacks taking advantage of affirmative action and Welfare, why are blacks not getting the “leg up” they apparently want? Does the answer always have to lay in the hands of White America, in Congress for more laws, in the treasuries for more handouts?
Fate of China...
Dr. Michael J. O'Connell commented on China's growing pollution problem, which has caused severe smog in many cities where buildings cannot be seen from across the street. Workers wear masks due to poor air quality. Beijing temporarily banned pollution before the Olympics so the city could be seen, but factories resumed operations afterwards. What Americans don't understand is that China went through a similar industrialization as the U.S. did decades ago, but many polluting industries were moved to China through outsourcing. While this outsourcing has hurt some Americans, it has improved air quality in the U.S. since much of the pollution is now in China.

Rob Ford...
Incredible the transformation I have witnessed this past month in the perspectives of the highbrow liberal talking heads Anderson Cooper and Piers Morgan about the Mayor of Toronto, Rob Ford. Two weeks ago both these CNN evening strongmen were in lockstep, vilifying other more socially conservative press agencies and various lay and even medical opinions regarding poor Mayor Ford and the unfair treatment he received regarding his eccentric, rather innocent yet playful antics – you know, alcohol stupor and smoking crack?.
Now, under closer scrutiny by countless addiction physicians Piers and Anderson have realized the monumental error in their ways and are now practically demanding the deportation of the portly abusive, boisterous, bing drinking, crack smoking addict. Bill Weir, another very sage CNN spokesman has been laying on abuse of his own, in persistently prodding Ford night after night.
Leave the drunk to Hell alone. He lives in Toronto and has been rendered powerless by the council board. Lord, let him slink off and get treatment in a rehab. Keep up the pressure and Ford will put a round in his head, or maybe the head of Bill Weir. Amazing how CNN has changed its tune in so little time, when anyone with half a brain (even Ford) could have identified a man in trouble weeks ago. Clearly, no brain trust on CNN evenings.
Barack obama
The document criticizes Barack Obama and his supporters among Democrats and liberals. It argues that Obama either knew about or should have known about: the attack on the Libyan embassy, problems with the Obamacare rollout, NSA spying on allies, issues with dealing with Syria's chemical weapons, and doubts about Iran giving up its nuclear program. However, Obama still has some support from Democrats, which the document says may be due to backing the first black president rather than his actual policies and achievements. It suggests Democrats should admit Obama was a mistake and be more selective in their next non-Caucasian candidate.
Those damn Republicans...
The Republicans faced criticism for their attempt to force negotiations on the Affordable Care Act, as President Obama would not compromise on his signature healthcare law. While their strategy of reducing government costs was sound, specifically targeting Obamacare gave Democrats ammunition. The Republicans should continue pursuing cost reductions through the budget and debt ceiling, which have been mainstream conservative goals for decades, in order to save the nation from an overreaching federal government. However, they should avoid mentioning Obamacare to make their case more effective.
Paycheck to paycheck
The document discusses reasons why many Americans, even those with steady incomes, live paycheck to paycheck with no savings. It argues that Americans overspend due to wants, lack of frugality, gluttony, and taste creep. Wanting unnecessary items seen on TV and overeating restaurant food are draining savings. While higher incomes allow for nicer cars and homes, basics were affordable before. This lifestyle leaves Americans vulnerable with no rainy day funds.
Equal pay for equal work
This document discusses reasons why women may not earn equal pay compared to men, despite doing equal work. It argues that childbearing responsibilities often interrupt women's work, as they need time off for childcare issues, school pickups, and other family duties. This leads to women accumulating skills and advancing in their careers more slowly than men who do not have these interruptions. As a result, the document claims it is not fair to expect employers to provide equal pay when the work is not equally consistent due to child-related interruptions. It also notes that women tend to advance most early in their careers before having children or later after children are raised, but are less competitive during child-rearing years.

More data and proactive random drug testing are needed to address this ongoing problem impacting patient care.

Is the rocket finally fueled for another epic launch? You grip your phone tighter, heart pounding in your chest. It's a wild ride, but you're in it for the long haul.

- 1. Nelson Mandela… Dr. Michael J. O’Connell noted, Nelson Mandela was an effective revolutionary, perhaps even great. He spent nearly a third of his life in prison for the cause of destroying apartheid. This has the face of a noble cause versus an entirely ignoble system of racial inequality. Political leaders from the past two decades were tripping over themselves to attend his funeral. Why taint our remembrance of the man with the puny and tainted minds such as Obama, Clinton and Carter? On that note, why should we remember Mandela only for his courage in the face of African violence, when the total view should include his disloyalty to Winnie, his wife, during his quarter century of incarceration, and his loyalty to such infamous thugs as Libya's Khadaffi and Cuba's Fidel Castro. Something smelled bad about the celebration of Mandela's life (the stadium in Soweta was apparently half full - not full as it is during World Cup Soccer), without a remembrance of his innumerable warts. The moral to this story is that all men and women have weaknesses and skeletons. Let’s once and for all realize that and stop the nonsense of idolizing fallible humans.
