"Local Teacher ReceivesNationalRecognition"
Ms. Kanene Holder, a localteacher from Launch Expeditionary Charter School, has
been selectedas an NEH Summer Scholar froma national applicant pool to attend one of 26
seminars and institutes supportedby the National Endowment for the Humanities. The
Endowment is a federalagency that, each summer, supports these enrichment opportunities
at colleges, universities, and culturalinstitutions so that teacherscan study with expertsin
humanities disciplines.
Ms. Holder will participate in a seminar entitled "Freedom for One, Freedom for All?
Abolitionand Women’s Suffrage, 1830s–1920s." The 2-week programwill be held at
BrooklynHistoricalSociety andthe Museum of the City of New York and directedby Emily
Potter-Ndiaye andFranny Kent.
The 30 teachersselectedto participate in the program eachreceive a stipend of
$2,100 to cover their travel, study, and livingexpenses.

Economy;Existentialism; Hannah Arendt; Immigration in California: Literature and
Theater;Immigration, Industrialization, and Illness in 19th-Century America;John
Steinbeck:SocialCritic and Ecologist;Philosophersof Education; Punishment, Politics, and
Culture; Race and Mental Health in History and Literature; Religious Worldsof New York;
Roman Daily Life: Petroniusand Pompeii; Shakespeare; Slavery, Equality, andthe
Constitution; U.S.-Russian/Soviet Relations, 1776-Present
The approximately 544 NEHSummer Scholarswho participate in these programs of
study will teach almost 68,000 American students the following year.
