The Kentucky Association of Counties paid $317,500 to settle five lawsuits against the Grant County Detention Center alleging inmate abuse. Six additional cases are pending, including two alleging sexual assault of inmates. Other pending cases claim inmates were beaten, denied medical care, and jailers were indifferent to inmate safety. The jail and county are insured through the Kentucky Association of Counties.
Bernie Kunkel lost his bid for a Republican nomination and blamed it on being painted as a liberal. He receives funding from conservative groups dedicated to "restoring" social values that oppose Alfred Kinsey's research on sexuality. Religious conservatives argue that Kinsey's research in the 1950s helped launch the sexual revolution and blame him for negative cultural changes since. They want to return to a time when sex was not openly discussed. However, openly discussing sex as Kinsey advocated can help protect children by allowing them to report abuse.
Christian creationist groups Answers in Genesis and Creation Ministries International are engaged in a public dispute. According to a report, AIG founder Ken Ham suggested untrue things about CMI managing director Carl Wieland's marriage in an attempt to discredit him. The report also found that AIG board chairman Don Landis wrote Wieland a letter questioning his spirituality and personal sins. As the conflict escalated, CMI sued AIG in Australian court for allegedly stealing magazine subscribers. While the two groups share a common goal, CMI and its supporters have distanced themselves from AIG's tactics.
The Kentucky authorities refused to renew the bingo license of Glenn Cole Evangelistic Association, citing concerns about its charitable mission. While Cole's bingo operation grossed $2.5 million last year in Kentucky, inspectors found that most of the proceeds went back into the bingo operation and little evidence it supported charitable goals as required by law. Cole has continued operating bingo in Ohio, where he grosses over $60,000 annually and has faced no regulatory issues.
American churches have failed the United States by not speaking out more strongly against torture. While over 10,000 Americans have signed an anti-torture statement, that is only a small fraction of the estimated 132 million Americans who attend religious services weekly. Torture is a form of violence that goes against principles of most major religions. It is also practically useless for eliciting useful information and damages America's reputation internationally when images emerge of American's torturing prisoners. A ban on torture is needed to protect both detainees' human rights and the moral authority and "soul of the nation."
Liberty Mortgage Funding filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2008 after experiencing serious financial troubles. Its chief operating officer admitted to keeping the company afloat by misappropriating lenders' funds, creating fake loans. An investigation found one employee, the COO, had too much unchecked power over finances. An insurance company agreed to pay $1.15 million to partially cover lenders' losses from Liberty Mortgage's collapse as a lesson about proper financial oversight.
Millions of dollars are spent annually on charitable gaming like bingo in Boyd County, Kentucky. Last year, over $31 million was spent on bingo in Boyd County alone, making it one of the top counties in the state for charitable gaming revenue. This money funds many local non-profits and charities. While bingo was once played mainly by senior citizens, the demographics are shifting to include more younger players in their 20s and 30s. Bingo provides entertainment and community for players while also supporting important causes.
