Many students made mistakes in their Japanese writing. Specifically: 1) Some students wrote "スポッツ" instead of the correct "スポーツ" for sports. 2) When forming yes/no questions, some students incorrectly included "なん", which means "what" and makes the sentence sound strange. 3) Many students did not follow instructions when negating sentences, saying "No, my hobby is..." instead of the requested "No, it is not that." or "No it isn't X".

2. Many students wrote スポッツ (Supottsu) NOT スポーツ
(Supootsu)
Let’s just remember the following:
-In Katakana, we extend a vowel sound by putting a dash (ー）
EX: ケーキ (keeki), スープ (suupu), ノート (nooto)
- We use a small tsu （ッ） to indicate a pause. In Romaji, this is
written as a double consonant.
EX: ネット(netto), ティッシュ (tisshu), ピーナッツ
(piinattsu)

3. When some students formed yes or no questions, they often
times included なん
Let’s just remember the following:
-なん means “what”. Adding なん here makes the sentence
sound like this: Is your hobby what drawing?
-It’s just an extra word that sounds weird.
-なん does NOT automatically turn a sentence into a question.
-か on the end of a sentence does turn a sentence into a
question.
EX: しゅみ は え です (My hobby is drawing).
しゅみ は え ですか (Is your hobby drawing?)

4. Many students did not follow instructions with regards to
negating.
The instructions stated to reply with “No, it is not that” or “No
it isn’t X”
- “No, it is not that” is いいえ、そう ではありません OR そう
じゃありません
- “No it isn’t cooking” is いいえ、 りょうり ではありません
(Or じゃありません）
Many students said いいえ, and then said what their hobbies
are. While this is not incorrect, it doesn’t follow the
instructions.
