USS Auk (AM-38) was an Lapwing-class minesweeper acquired by the U.S. Navy after World War I for the task of removing mines that had been placed during the war.
The document summarizes the history of the US Coast Guard Air Station on Annette Island, Alaska. It describes how the airfield was established in 1940-1941 to provide an refueling stop for aircraft between Seattle and Anchorage during World War 2. Canada supplied fighter planes to the airfield in 1942 to help with air defense. After the war, the Coast Guard established a permanent presence at the airfield with seaplanes and helicopters, which grew over the decades until the station was relocated to Sitka in 1977. The document provides details on aircraft operations and expansions of facilities at the airfield over its lifetime.
The document summarizes key events in the Pacific theater from Pearl Harbor to early 1943. It describes Japan's initial success, including victories at Guam, Wake Island, Hong Kong, and the Philippines. The tide began to turn at the Battles of the Coral Sea and Midway in May and June 1942, where the US halted Japan's expansion and destroyed four of its aircraft carriers. Bloody fighting ensued on Guadalcanal over the next six months, showing Japan's land warfare dominance was over. By February 1943 they abandoned the island, marking the end of their initiative at sea. The document also discusses the internment of Japanese Americans and the Supreme Court case Korematsu v. US that upheld the constitutionality
“Admiral Rickover was responsible for the development, construction, operation, repair, refueling, and maintenance of more power reactors than the total of all other American power reactors. In addition, he was responsible for Shippingport, the world’s first commercial atomic power plant. Almost none of the necessary technology was available; it all had to be created by his program.”

Honoring Northwestern's Heroes -- Adrian MarksDan Moore
Adrian Marks was a Northwestern University graduate who saved 56 survivors from the sinking of the USS Indianapolis in 1945. As a pilot in the US Navy, Marks landed his PBY Catalina flying boat in heavy seas to rescue survivors, despite orders prohibiting open sea landings. Over several hours, his crew transferred all 56 survivors they could reach to rescue ships. Though earning an Air Medal, Marks and his crew were believed deserving of higher honors for their extraordinary heroism in saving lives at great risk. Adrian Marks exemplified courage and self-sacrifice as one of Northwestern's heroes.
The document discusses several topics related to US Naval doctrine, history, and operations:
1. It outlines six areas of Naval doctrine including naval warfare, intelligence, operations, logistics, planning, and command/control.
2. It discusses the seven principles of naval logistics and lists the first US Navy ship named after an enlisted sailor.
3. It describes the historical conditions that led to the formation of the US Navy in 1775 and the three classes of naval vessels that existed at that time.
4. It covers several military customs and courtesies as well as important events in naval history including battles and space missions involving sailors. It also discusses the significance of events related to information dominance.
This presentation illustrates the US Naval Academy textbook chapter titled "The Dual Advance to the Philippines." It follows MacArthur's drive west along the New Guinea coast, and Nimitz' Central Pacific drive from the Marshalls to the Marianas.

The document summarizes theories about disappearances that have occurred in the Bermuda Triangle region of the Atlantic Ocean. It describes several famous incidents of ships and planes that went missing in the Triangle, including Flight 19 in 1945 and the USS Cyclops in 1918. The main theories discussed are that magnetic abnormalities in the area may interfere with navigation equipment and methane gas eruptions could cause ships to suddenly sink. While supernatural explanations are popular, the document argues more natural causes like pirates or storms can probably account for most disappearances.
1) The Andromeda was a 4-masted steel barque built in 1890 in Glasgow, Scotland that was wrecked off the coast of Cornwall, England in 1915.
2) Under the command of Captain James Deeks, the Andromeda departed Tacoma, Washington in September 1914 carrying a cargo of wheat for Britain.
3) In the early hours of February 13, 1915 near Falmouth harbor, the Andromeda dragged its anchors and went aground on rocks during a storm, resulting in the loss of one crew member. Most of the crew were rescued but the ship was a total loss.

99 men went missing aboard the USS Scorpion, somewhere in the North Atlantic.
Find out how an ingenious scientist named John Craven found a (nuclear) needle in a haystack by using the wisdom of crowds.
The John F. Kennedy Space Center - America's Spaceport - is the doorway to space. From its unique facilities, humans and machines begin to explore the solar system, reaching out to the sun, the moon, the planets and beyond.
The document discusses nuclear marine propulsion, specifically for naval vessels. It describes how the US Navy has increasingly adopted nuclear power over the past 50+ years, now operating over 70 nuclear submarines and 10 nuclear-powered aircraft carriers. Nuclear power allows for unlimited submerged endurance without refueling, and long refueling intervals for surface vessels. The first nuclear-powered vessel was the USS Nautilus submarine launched in 1954, which set new speed and distance records and helped establish nuclear propulsion as ideal for naval applications due to its advantages over diesel or other fuel-powered systems.
The Panama Canal connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans through an 82 km man-made waterway across the Isthmus of Panama. It features three sets of locks - Gatun, Miraflores, and Pedro Miguel locks. The locks raise and lower ships up to Gatun Lake, which ships traverse to cross the isthmus. The canal cuts the travel distance between the US West Coast and East Coast in half. It was constructed between 1904-1914 after earlier French attempts failed and has since been expanded to allow larger ships.
Captain David Schnell, a retired Navy officer, served for 27 years including roles on two US warships, one of which was the USS Peleliu. The USS Peleliu was the final ship of the Tarawa class and was commissioned in honor of the Third Amphibious Force's capture of Peleliu Island in World War II. It measures 254 meters with a 40.3 meter wide flight deck and features two turbines, two boilers, two propellers, and two aircraft elevators. In 2014, the USS Peleliu conducted a burial at sea ceremony for 22 deceased US veterans.
The document summarizes Operation Fiery Vigil, the 1991 evacuation of over 45,000 military personnel, dependents, and civilians from Clark Air Force Base and Subic Naval Base in the Philippines during the eruption of Mount Pinatubo. It provides background on the history and establishment of the bases. It describes the events leading up to the evacuation including the volcanic eruption. It details the evacuation process where people were transported by road, ship, and aircraft to locations like Guam and Hawaii over 11 days. The evacuation ultimately led to the permanent closure of the two major U.S. bases in the Philippines.
Captain James Cook was a renowned British explorer who led three major voyages of discovery. On his first voyage from 1768-1771 aboard the Endeavour, Cook mapped New Zealand and became the first European to encounter Australia's eastern coastline. His second voyage from 1772-1775 saw Cook cross the Antarctic Circle and discover many Pacific islands. Cook's third and final voyage from 1776-1779 aimed to find the Northwest Passage, during which he discovered the Hawaiian Islands but was killed in a confrontation with Hawaiians in Kealakekua Bay. Cook circumnavigated the globe on his voyages and made significant contributions to exploration, navigation and cartography.
Captain James Cook was a British explorer who made three voyages to the Pacific Ocean between 1768 and 1779. Some key facts:
- He commanded the HMS Endeavour and was the first European to visit Hawaii, New Zealand, and parts of the east coast of Australia.
- On his first voyage, he aimed to observe the transit of Venus and search for the unknown southern continent.
- His second voyage sought to find the Northwest Passage between the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
- On his third voyage, Cook explored the Pacific Northwest coast of North America and was killed in a confrontation with Hawaiians in 1779.
1) In 1979, the bulk carrier MV Star Opal ran aground on a shoal in British Columbia's Laredo Channel that had been detected 150 days prior in a hydrographic survey.
2) The shoal was located in an area that had not been properly surveyed since the 1920s, despite large ships using the channel since 1954.
3) Multiple parties failed to adequately communicate the detection of the new shoal, including the Canadian Hydrographic Service, coast guard, shipping agent, and pilot. As a result, the Star Opal was not warned and ran aground on the shoal.
Captain James Cook was a British explorer, navigator, cartographer, and captain in the Royal Navy. He made three voyages to the Pacific Ocean and helped expand British territory. During his third voyage, he was killed in Hawaii in 1779 after a confrontation with native Hawaiians on the beach at Kealakekua Bay.
The document provides information about disappearances that have occurred in the Bermuda Triangle region of the Atlantic Ocean. It first describes how hundreds of ships and aircraft have mysteriously vanished in the area that cannot be explained by human error, disasters, or other causes. Scientists then propose that methane bubbles rising from the sea floor could cause ships to sink by lowering the density of the water. The document goes on to give several specific examples of incidents where ships and aircraft disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle area along with some additional context surrounding the disappearances.

The U.S. Navy christened its first DDG-1000 class destroyer, a $3 billion, 610-foot stealth ship with advanced technology. The ship, named after Admiral Elmo Zumwalt, features a composite deckhouse and angular shape to reduce its radar signature. It has an electric propulsion system and will carry state-of-the-art weapons over 60 miles away. The ship will require half the crew of current destroyers and use cameras to monitor activities, allowing it to perform its mission with fewer sailors.
The Bermuda Triangle is an area of the western Atlantic Ocean where a number of aircraft and ships are said to have disappeared under mysterious circumstances. Theories for disappearances in the Bermuda Triangle include the remnants of the lost city of Atlantis creating disturbances, aliens or UFOs abducting ships' crews, and the presence of methane hydrates releasing bubbles of methane gas that cause ships to sink. While some of the theories have been disproven or lack scientific evidence, over 100 vessels are said to have vanished in the region without a trace since the 19th century.
The document provides background information on the rise of American naval power from 1865-1914. It discusses improvements in ship construction and armaments in Europe that the U.S. Navy began adopting. The Naval Academy and War College were established to advance professional knowledge and strategy. Alfred Thayer Mahan's writings on sea power theory influenced nations to build strong navies. The U.S. built its steel and shipbuilding industries and constructed modern battleships. The Spanish-American War broke out in 1898 over Cuba, sinking the USS Maine and bringing the U.S. into war with Spain.

Construction of NAUTILUS was made
possible by the successful
development of a nuclear propulsion
plant by a group of scientists and
engineers at the Naval Reactors
Branch of the Atomic Energy
Commission, under the leadership of
Captain Hyman G. Rickover, USN.
CDR Anderson On July 23, 1958,
NAUTILUS departed Pearl Harbor,
Hawaii under top secret orders to
conduct “Operation Sunshine”, the first
crossing of the North Pole by a ship. At
11:15 pm on August 3, 1958, NAUTILUS’
second Commanding Officer,
Commander William R. Anderson,
announced to his crew, “For the world,
our country, and the Navy – the North
Pole.” With 116 men aboard, NAUTILUS
had accomplished the “impossible”,
reaching the geographic North Pole – 90
