The Yaguarete, the third largest feline species, is now seriously endangered due to habitat loss and lack of prey as its forest home disappears. A flood last year in northern Argentina left many homeless after four days of heavy rain, with deforestation exacerbating flooding by preventing absorption of rainfall. To reduce flooding risks, development should avoid flat lands near rivers and waste should not be dumped in waterways.
